Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Pilanesberg National Park for its accessibility from Johannesburg and its malaria-free status, making it a convenient safari option. Many highlight the thrill of spotting the Big Five and the unique volcanic landscapes. However, some note that road conditions can be challenging, and for seasoned safari-goers, the park might feel smaller compared to Kruger.
"Incredible Morning Game Drive at Pilanesberg
We went on the morning safari in July and had to be at Sun Central by 6:15 a.m. — absolutely freezing, full-on winter, but so worth it! Despite the cold, the experience was unforgettable. We spotted elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, impalas, bulls, and even a lion in the distance. One of the most surreal sights was the “smoking rivers” in the early morning mist — pure bliss. The guides were knowledgeable and engaging, making the whole drive even more special.
Tip: Dress warmly, bring gloves, and don’t miss the sunrise over the bush — it's truly magical."

"If you a looking for a quiet, peaceful and relaxing activity over the weekend this is the place. The only con is the potholes but understandable considering the type of environment and even an entry level hatchback is able to handle both the tar and gravel road. The entrance fee is also reasonable for someone looking for budget friendly things to do"

"Pilanesberg National Park is a gem — stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and a malaria-free safari experience just a few hours from Johannesburg. We saw elephants, rhinos, giraffes, leopards and more in their natural habitat. A must-visit for first-time and seasoned safari-goers alike!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When planning your visit, consider booking guided game drives. Guides are often skilled at spotting animals and can make the experience more engaging for children. The excitement of seeing elephants, giraffes, or even a lion can be a lifelong memory for kids. Remember to pack essentials like sun protection, hats, and plenty of snacks to keep everyone happy during drives.
💰 Budget Travelers
While guided tours offer a premium experience, self-driving allows you to explore at your own pace. Be prepared for potentially rougher road conditions in some areas. For day-trippers, packing a picnic lunch and snacks is essential to avoid higher prices at park facilities.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
While self-driving is an option, hiring a private guide for photography can be beneficial. They can position the vehicle for optimal shots and have a keen eye for animal behavior. Remember to be patient, as wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and always prioritize the animals' well-being over the perfect shot.

The Thrill of the Game Drive
Early morning and late afternoon drives are particularly rewarding. During these cooler parts of the day, animals are most active, moving to waterholes or foraging. The soft light of sunrise and sunset also creates stunning photographic opportunities. Some lodges offer both open-vehicle and closed-vehicle drives, with open vehicles providing a more immersive, albeit sometimes dustier, experience.
For those seeking a truly unique perspective, a hot air balloon safari offers an unforgettable dawn experience. Floating silently above the park, you can witness the landscape and its inhabitants from a breathtaking aerial view, a truly magical way to start the day.
Accommodation Options: From Rustic to Luxurious
For those seeking comfort and convenience, numerous lodges are situated both inside and on the periphery of the park. These lodges often offer all-inclusive packages that include meals and multiple guided game drives per day. Popular choices include lodges within the Black Rhino Game Reserve, known for its excellent game viewing.
Luxury options, such as Lush Private Lodge, offer opulent suites and personalized service, elevating the safari experience to a new level of indulgence. Regardless of your choice, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons, to secure your preferred accommodation.
Pilanesberg vs. Kruger: Making the Right Choice
Pilanesberg, on the other hand, is much more accessible, located about a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg. This makes it ideal for day trips or shorter stays, allowing visitors to experience a genuine safari without extensive travel. While it may not boast the same sheer volume of animals as Kruger, Pilanesberg offers excellent chances of spotting the Big Five and other wildlife in a more manageable setting.
Furthermore, Pilanesberg is a malaria-free zone, which can be a significant factor for some travelers. The park's unique geological formation also adds an extra layer of interest. Ultimately, the decision often comes down to time constraints and travel preferences, with Pilanesberg offering a fantastic and convenient safari experience for those based in or visiting Johannesburg.
