While in Johannesburg, SA, I visited The Number Four/Old Fort Prison, which jailed many political prisoners, including Winnie Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, and has become a museum and the site of the Constitutional Court. While it now houses photos and artifacts commemorating Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists, walking through its halls, learning more of the history was harrowing. I r...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Workers Museum a poignant and essential stop for understanding Johannesburg's labor history and the stark realities of migrant worker life in the early 20th century. While the exhibits can be somber, they offer crucial historical context. Some find the museum's presentation could be more engaging, but its historical significance is undeniable. Instagram+1

"From the entrance to the Workers’ Museum, you enter a different world that was inhabited by local and regional migrant works wanting to either provide for their families or chase their dreams of a better life. The history is rich with sadness and filled with hope. The living spaces and showers pull at your heartstrings! You’ll leave this Museum with a sense of gratitude of the life you’re living presently.

Worth the visit definitely - a few hours at most."

Regan Levendale

"The history in this museum is rich. It paints a clear picture of how black men were treated in the mining sectors and at the compounds. From reading and listening to the stories, one can realise that some of these men were sold lies about Johannesburg, that it's the city of gold and that once you get there then you've made it. They got here only to be restricted from being with women and children sleeping on concrete hard floors."

Matete Payc

"The museum is closed. I arrived at 2pm, midweek, when google said it was open.

It doesn’t look like it has been open for a while, and there are fences with no obvious sign of development or reopening. The Africa museum opposite is open, so not a total waste of a trip, but a real shame that google says it is open when fact it is not."
