What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking views from Table Mountain, calling the cable car ride a unique experience. While the cost and potential for long queues are noted drawbacks, the spectacular scenery and accessible summit trails make it an unforgettable highlight of any Cape Town trip. Many emphasize the importance of checking weather conditions for optimal visibility.
"The rotating floor aerial cablecar that takes you to the summit, of Table Mountain takes approximately five-minute to the top and it is an experience by itself. The ticket to the top is fairly inexpensive for what it offers. Sometimes there are long lines to get the tickets. The wait and cost is worth it due to the stunning view from the top of the city, the Ocean, and the Lion's Head mountain. Sometimes the top can be cover by low hanging clouds blocking the view, even so, as the clouds clear the views are stunning. On the top there are a couple of nice easy trails allowing you to see down from both sides of the mountain. Table Mountain is recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature."

"The most beautiful view ive ever seen. Its Mountains, its a city and Ocean. It was busy but so worth the wait. The food and drinks are very expensive unfortunately up there. But wow what a view. What a experience. We walk for about 2 hours and couldn't see everything because we were tired. But so worth it to go up."
Jevonné Mendonça
"The entrance lines were insane, so buy online in advance and buy fast track. The fast track entrance is next to the ticket office, indicated with a yellow sign. When you leave don't go through gift shop, there's a sign to the right side of it for fast track. They offer free wifi and there's a restaurant, although it was small, packed and hard to find seating. If you can go on a clear day I'm sure the views are amazing. I tried on two separate days and only got a glimpse unfortunately."

Navigating the Table Mountain Cable Car Experience
Planning your visit is crucial. The cable car's operation is highly dependent on weather conditions, particularly wind. It can close with little notice, so checking the official website or local weather reports is essential. Many visitors recommend purchasing tickets online in advance to bypass potentially long queues, especially during peak tourist seasons. Some reviews mention a 'fast track' option which can further expedite entry.
Once at the summit, you're greeted with unparalleled views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding mountains. There are several well-maintained walking paths that allow you to explore different vantage points. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers, as the weather at the top can be significantly cooler and windier than at the base.
Understanding Table Mountain's Weather and Visibility
Wind is another major factor. High winds can lead to the closure of the cable car, sometimes for extended periods. It's not uncommon for the cable car to be closed for several days in a row, especially during winter months. This unpredictability means that flexibility in your travel plans is key. If you have a limited time in Cape Town, try to schedule your visit early in your trip to allow for rescheduling if needed.
To maximize your chances of a clear and enjoyable experience, check the weather forecast and live webcam feeds from the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website. Many visitors find that early mornings often offer clearer conditions before the day's heat or cloud build-up. Being prepared for changing conditions, with layers of clothing, will ensure you're comfortable regardless of what the mountain throws at you.
Exploring the Summit: Trails and Views
One of the highlights of exploring the summit is the opportunity to see the unique fynbos vegetation, endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom. Keep an eye out for the various proteas and other indigenous plants. The trails are well-marked, but it's always wise to stay aware of your surroundings and the changing weather. Some visitors recommend spending at least 1-2 hours to truly appreciate the different perspectives and natural beauty.
Beyond the natural beauty, the summit also features amenities like a restaurant and gift shop. However, be aware that prices for food and drinks can be quite high, as noted by many visitors. Bringing your own water and snacks is a practical tip to save money and ensure you have refreshments during your exploration.
