"Wonderful place"
Alexander Sokol
"Staro-nova crkva Sv.

A Journey Through Time: The History of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul
However, the church's resilience was severely tested towards the end of World War II when it was bombed and almost completely destroyed. Despite efforts by friars to restore it, the damage was too extensive. Following the war, communist authorities even erected a post office building on its site. It wasn't until the early 21st century that the church was painstakingly rebuilt in its 'original' form, a testament to its enduring significance.
Today, visitors can admire the richly decorated and harmonious baroque facade, which stands in contrast to the significantly more modest and simple interior. This juxtaposition offers a unique perspective on the church's layered past and its eventual rebirth. The adjacent historic presbytery also adds to the site's historical allure, making it a fascinating stop for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike.
Architectural Contrasts: Facade vs. Interior
Upon entering, however, visitors find a significantly more modest and very simple interior. This stark difference is often noted by reviewers and creates a unique atmosphere. While the exterior speaks of grandeur and historical embellishment, the interior offers a more serene and contemplative space, perhaps reflecting a different phase of its reconstruction or a deliberate design choice to emphasize spiritual simplicity over outward show.
This architectural duality makes the Church of Saints Peter and Paul a compelling site to explore. It invites visitors to ponder the layers of history and the decisions made during its various rebuilds. The visual impact of the ornate facade followed by the quiet interior is a memorable experience for many.
