"The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the “Slovak Church”, is a significant late Gothic monument in the heart of Banská Štiavnica.
History and architecture
The church was built between 1488 and 1491 on an undeveloped area in the city center, near the town hall. Construction work was completed in 1500, and on November 16 of the same year, the church was consecrated by Bishop Gregor, vicar of the Esztergom Archbishopric. Evidence of this event is the twelve consecration crosses located around the perimeter of the church, which mark the places of anointing with holy chrism.
In 1658, preaching began in the church in Slovak, which led to its designation as the “Slovak Church”.
The church is single-nave, vaulted with a late Gothic star vault, which smoothly passes from the nave to the presbytery. This architectural element unifies the space and gives it a unique character.
Location and access
The church is located at Radničné námestie 17, in close proximity to Námestie sv. Trojice, which makes it an easily accessible attraction for visitors to the city.
Visit and services
The church is an active place of worship and is open to the public. If you are interested in a tour outside the season, you can contact the church administrator at the e-mail address kostolsvkatarinay@gmail.com.
