What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Oponice Castle Ruins for its stunning panoramic views and the picturesque, albeit crumbling, medieval architecture. The free entry and the opportunity for a scenic hike through the forest are significant draws. However, many note the ongoing renovation means parts are hazardous, and amenities are very basic, requiring visitors to be well-prepared.
"You can still explore the ruins even though it's crumbling. Beautiful views at the top and the trails up to the ruins are well kept and surrounding by forest mushrooms 🍄🏰"

"Wonderful place to visit even during the winter. The castle itself is going through reconstructions, but is a nice hike. I don't recommend walking from the nearby village Oponice, but from the opposite side from Horne Lefantovce. You park by the B&B called dolina, and follow the road to a field. Just follow "Lesna cesta" the walk is less steep and slippery, with only a small climb. Watch for a sign "Hrad" (Castle) when it feels like you're about to go downhill. The castle is moderately well kept thanks to the efforts of the locals since the year 2000. It has multiple "forest toilets" and you can bring something to grill and eat since there are multiple fireplaces. Entrance is free! ❤️"

"Very nice ruins, but apparently its renovation takes much, much time. I was here over two years ago and am not sure whether anything more was renovated during that time. The castle is very picturesque and what it needs are only safer stairs (instead of a kind of ladders, what is now)... The views from the castle are magnificent, it is definitely a worth visiting place."

Navigating the Trails to Oponice Castle
For a more accessible and less strenuous experience, hikers often prefer the route starting from Horne Lefantovce. This trail begins near the Dolina B&B and follows a forest road ('Lesna cesta'). While still a moderate hike, it's generally less steep and offers a more pleasant ascent. Look for the 'Hrad' (Castle) sign when the path seems to descend, indicating you're nearing the ruins.
Regardless of the chosen path, wearing sturdy hiking boots is crucial. The trails can be uneven, and sections within the ruins themselves require careful footing. Always check the weather forecast before your visit and be prepared for varying conditions.
The State of Renovation and Safety
Visitors should be aware that some parts of the castle are in disrepair and can be hazardous. Sections may be difficult to access, and stairs might be replaced by more rudimentary ladder-like structures, requiring extra caution. The crumbling nature of the stonework means visitors need to be mindful of their surroundings at all times to avoid accidents.
Despite the ongoing renovation and inherent risks, the castle's picturesque nature and the magnificent views it offers make it a worthwhile destination for those prepared to navigate its condition responsibly. The free entry and the opportunity to explore a piece of history add to its appeal.
Amenities and Visitor Preparedness

This makes it an ideal spot for a picnic lunch or an afternoon barbecue amidst historical ruins. However, visitors must bring all their own food, drinks, grilling supplies, and any other necessities they might require.
It's recommended to pack accordingly, considering the hike and the limited services. Bringing plenty of water, snacks, and any personal items you might need will ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience exploring this unique historical site.
