What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Shepherd's Field Chapel for its profound biblical significance and moving atmosphere. Many highlight the beauty of the murals and the touching experience of singing hymns on site. While the chapel itself is simple, its historical context and the surrounding ancient caves add significant depth to the visit, making it a highly recommended stop for those in the area.
"This place was simply amazing. Worship broke out in the little cathedral they have here and then more down by the shepherds fields. The whole place is so beautiful and the fact this is where the first we’re told about the birth of the Messiah by the angels makes it all that much more beautiful. Highly recommended spot if you are ever in the area."
Joshua Bott
"It’s a pretty remote area but totally worth visiting for the history and story behind it, especially if you visit with a guide who can explain everything. The church isn’t the largest nor most elaborate but it’s the simplicity which is memorable. The number of people inside is limited giving the opportunity to take in all the paintings properly and the surrounding grounds are equally as impressive when you understand the background. Certainly worth a visit."
Steve Bintley
"Great place to visit , it is very interesting to know that the shepherds were the first who know about Messiah birth so they are the gospel spread or first evangelist
This facility was built within 100 years but there are caves and other archaeological stuff which holds the ancient history. It’s so great to see the caves and archaeological things"

The presence of ancient caves within the grounds suggests continuous human habitation and use of the land for millennia, potentially even by shepherds tending their flocks in biblical times. These caves offer a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of those who lived and worked in this sacred landscape.
The chapel's modern construction, built in 1953, is a testament to the enduring faith and the desire to create a dedicated space for remembrance and worship. The striking glass dome and bronze angel atop the structure serve as a constant visual reminder of the heavenly message that resonated here, making it a powerful symbol for pilgrims and tourists alike.

These artworks are not merely decorative; they serve as visual storytelling, depicting key events from the Nativity and the life of Jesus. Visitors often remark on the magnificence of this art, finding it deeply touching and inspiring. The limited number of visitors allowed inside at any one time further enhances the ability to appreciate these detailed depictions.
The chapel also incorporates elements of the natural landscape, including ancient caves that have been preserved. These caves add a layer of historical depth, connecting the modern structure to the ancient past of the site. The combination of contemporary design, artistic expression, and historical preservation makes the Shepherd's Field Chapel a unique and memorable destination.
