Reviews Summary

While many find it an amazing and wonderful place, some have noted that interactions with temple attendants regarding photography can be off-putting, suggesting a need for more tactful visitor engagement.

"The Cathedral"

Nata Lind

"In the very heart of Sevastopol, on Bolshaya Morskaya Street, there is a majestic Orthodox Pokrovsky Cathedral. Its construction began in 1892 under the direction and design of architect Valentin Avgustovich Feldman. The building is a basilica-style five-domed pillarless church. Above the main dome is a pointed vault surrounded by four twelve-sided turrets. In the western part of the cathedral rises a bell tower connected to the church. The turrets and bell tower have a tented roof crowned with onion-shaped domes. The building is decorated with rows of semicircular kokoshniks, the cornices are emphasized by stucco friezes. In 1905, the cathedral was consecrated. In May 1917, the remains of Lieutenant Pyotr Petrovich Schmidt and several sailors shot on Berezan Island were temporarily buried in the cathedral. On February 23, 1919, Archimandrite Veniamin was consecrated as Bishop of Sevastopol in the cathedral. However, with the arrival of the Bolsheviks, the cathedral was closed. Services were held here again during the occupation of Sevastopol by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War.
During the military actions, the building was badly damaged: two southern aisles were destroyed. In 1947, John Krashanovsky was appointed rector of the Sevastopol Pokrovsky Cathedral, who was engaged in the restoration of the temple. Already in 1948, the cathedral was restored and consecrated. Until 1962, services were held there, but then the cathedral was closed again and a sports hall and city archives were located there.
After the collapse of the USSR, the northern aisle of the cathedral was given to believers in 1992, which was consecrated in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon. Two years later, at the beginning of 1994, the entire building was given to the believers.
By the 100th anniversary of the church, the restoration of the southern aisle was completed, the facade was restored, the domes and crosses were covered with gold leaf."

"A wonderful place, a very beautiful temple, but I would still like to make a remark to the temple attendant, who throughout the entire temple reprimanded a parishioner for taking a photo... This behavior pushes people away from visiting shrines. I sincerely wish that the church servants would treat parishioners tolerably and have a sense of tact; comments can be made in a civilized manner"

Architectural Marvel

Pokrovsky Cathedral, a prominent landmark in Sevastopol, is a testament to late 19th-century Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture. Designed by Valentin Avgustovich Feldman, its construction began in 1892. The church is built in a basilica style, featuring a distinctive five-domed, pillarless design. The central dome is a pointed vault, encircled by four twelve-sided turrets, with a tented roof crowning the structure and its onion-shaped domes. The facade is adorned with rows of semicircular kokoshniks and cornices highlighted by stucco friezes, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. Reddit

The cathedral's history is as rich as its design. It was consecrated in 1905 and later served as a temporary burial site for Lieutenant Pyotr Petrovich Schmidt and his sailors in 1917. During the Great Patriotic War, the building sustained significant damage, with two southern aisles destroyed. However, it underwent restoration in 1948 and has since been a site of continuous spiritual and architectural renewal, culminating in the recent gilding of its domes and crosses for its 100th anniversary. Reddit

Modern visitors often praise the cathedral's beauty and spiritual ambiance, noting the impressive restoration efforts. However, some have pointed out that interactions with certain attendants regarding photography can be less than welcoming, suggesting a need for more tactful visitor engagement. Reddit

A Witness to History

Pokrovsky Cathedral has stood through tumultuous periods, reflecting the complex history of Sevastopol. Its construction in the late 19th century marked a period of relative peace and prosperity, but this was soon shattered by war. The cathedral's role as a temporary resting place for fallen heroes, like Lieutenant Pyotr Petrovich Schmidt, underscores its significance during times of conflict and national mourning. Reddit

The Soviet era brought challenges, with the cathedral being closed and repurposed. Services resumed during the Nazi occupation, only for the building to suffer damage. The post-war period saw dedicated efforts towards its restoration, allowing services to continue until another closure in 1962. The northern aisle was eventually returned to believers in 1992, with the entire building following in 1994, symbolizing a spiritual revival after the collapse of the USSR. TikTok+2

The cathedral's resilience mirrors that of the city itself. Its ongoing restoration and continued use as a place of worship highlight its enduring importance to the community, serving as a beacon of faith and a reminder of the past. TikTok
