What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Djoudj Bird Sanctuary as an amazing and worthwhile destination, especially for bird lovers, with thousands of pelicans and diverse wildlife. However, the park's organization, particularly regarding pricing and transparency, is frequently cited as chaotic and frustrating, requiring visitors to be proactive in confirming costs and inclusions.
"A really nice National Park for Bird Lovers. Prices are not clear so here are the details so you don't get surprised if you organize the trip yourself:
10.000 cfa Fee for the car to enter the park
10.000 cfa for a guide from the park (no entry without guide)
4.000 cfa per person boat ride (approx. 1 hour)
5.000 cfa per person park entrance fee
We found a taxi driver in St. Louis to drive us for 30.000 cfa.
After the boat ride we wanted to visit the Miradors/ Watchtowers and Grand Lac, but our guide said that this is not included.
I read in the reviews before that this is not true.
At the park entrance we weren't given the choice of the "small" or "big" Tour either.
You should ask specifically beforehand if the Miradors are included in the price!
We gave the guide and taxi driver each 5.000 cfa extra in the end to do the big tour with us.
The park should have their rates published for everyone to clearly see.
We saw a lot of pelicans, flamingos, an eagle, herons and other beautiful birds. It's worth it, but you should know about the cost before.
Enjoy!"

"Amazing place, thousands of birds of any kind, pelican mostly.not so easy to reach but worthy. Info not online and even there in African style. Cost 5000 each entrance, 10.000 car ( we had a driver) plus 4000 each for the boat tour and 6000 cfa guide. Really worthy. We saw even monkey, wild African pig and sciacal on the way"

"Visit arranged as part of a 14 day tour of Senegal/Gambia.
Lots of wildlife spotted through our bus window on the journey there and back. Boat trip (who does not love a boat trip in the warmth ,peace and quiet)
Very noisy pelicans!!!
Best to visit early in the morning when the pelicans are out and about fishing.
I am not a "birder" but thoroughly enjoyed the experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Importance of Djoudj as a UNESCO Site
The wetlands provide a vital source of water and food for these birds, especially after they cross the Sahara Desert. This makes Djoudj a crucial refueling and nesting ground. The sheer density and diversity of birdlife, particularly the massive colonies of Great White Pelicans, make it a globally significant site for avian conservation and a testament to the importance of preserving these natural habitats.
Its designation underscores the need for continued protection and sustainable tourism practices. Visitors contribute to this by respecting the environment and adhering to park regulations, ensuring that Djoudj remains a haven for birds for generations to come.
Navigating Costs and Logistics
Many visitors recommend clarifying exactly what is included in any tour package or guide arrangement. Specifically, inquire if access to the Miradors (watchtowers) and the Grand Lac are part of the standard offering, as these may sometimes be considered separate or additional excursions. Some travelers have found it beneficial to negotiate with their taxi driver from St. Louis for the round trip and then arrange the guide and boat tour upon arrival.
While the organization can feel chaotic and untransparent at times, the incredible wildlife sightings often make the effort worthwhile. Being prepared for these costs and understanding the need for a guide can help manage expectations and ensure a smoother experience.
The Majestic Pelicans of Djoudj
Witnessing the pelicans in their natural environment is described as a dream come true by many. The noise from their colonies can be quite significant, leading one visitor to compare it to 'camping at the end of a runway crowded with 747s.' This vivid description captures the overwhelming presence and activity of these magnificent birds.
January is noted as a peak time for pelican nesting, offering a unique opportunity to observe their breeding behaviors. The sight of thousands of pelicans taking to the air or fishing in the wetlands is a powerful and unforgettable experience for any visitor, birder or not.
