Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the King Saud Mosque for its magnificent architecture and impressive scale, calling it one of Jeddah's most beautiful mosques. While interior access can be limited, especially on Fridays, the exterior alone is considered a breathtaking sight and a significant landmark.

"Big Beautiful Mosque ❤️
Friday Prayer timing is 1pm"

Muhammad Rameez

"During my recent trip to Jeddah, I had the privilege of admiring the architectural grandeur of the King Saud bin Abdulaziz Mosque, located in the Al-Sharafeyyah District. Designed by the renowned architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil and completed in 1987, this mosque stands as a testament to intricate Islamic architecture and thoughtful urban design.

The mosque covers an impressive area of 9,700 square meters, with the prayer hall alone spanning 2,464 square meters. The largest dome, with a span of 20 meters, reaches a height of 42 meters, while the minaret towers at 60 meters, creating a striking silhouette against the skyline. The design layout evokes the elegance of Persian four-iwan structures, reminiscent of the Great Mosque of Esfahan in Iran. The influence of the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan in Cairo is evident in the minaret and other architectural details.

The mosque's rectangular structure, slightly offset to the west, incorporates a central court accessible through four iwans. Unlike traditional Persian iwans, these serve as openings in a large screen wall rather than individual structures. The north and south iwans precede domed halls, leading to four pillared halls on the east and west sides. The larger eastern halls feature three naves with five bays and eight pillars each, culminating in the grand east iwan, which connects to the main domed hall in front of the qibla wall.

The mosque's placement at an angle to the street grid ensures the qibla wall faces Makkah, creating triangular rooms between the mosque and the external facade on the north, south, and east walls. The west facade, opening to Medinah Road, is particularly noteworthy. It features a large cubic structure with an iwan and minaret, creating an iconic visual group accessible by a flight of steps.

Despite my intention to explore the interior, visiting on a Friday meant public access was restricted. Nonetheless, the mosque's exterior view alone is breathtaking, reflecting its historical and cultural significance. Its roadside location ensures it is visible from various vantage points, offering a constant reminder of its majestic presence.

For anyone visiting Jeddah, I highly recommend experiencing the beauty of King Saud bin Abdulaziz Mosque. Its architectural marvels and serene ambiance make it a remarkable landmark, capturing the essence of Islamic heritage and design."

Architectural Marvel

The King Saud Mosque, designed by architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, is a stunning example of modern Islamic architecture completed in 1987. Its design draws inspiration from historical mosques, notably the Great Mosque of Esfahan in Iran for its Persian four-iwan layout and the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan in Cairo for its minaret and other details. The mosque's impressive scale includes a main dome spanning 20 meters and reaching 42 meters high, complemented by a 60-meter minaret that creates a striking silhouette against the Jeddah skyline. Reddit

The mosque's rectangular structure is thoughtfully oriented, with a central court accessible through four iwans. These iwans lead to domed halls and pillared spaces, creating a sense of grandeur and flow. The placement of the mosque at an angle to the street grid ensures the qibla wall correctly faces Makkah, a crucial element in mosque design. This orientation also creates unique triangular spaces between the mosque and its external facade. Reddit

The west facade, facing Medinah Road, is particularly noteworthy. It features a prominent cubic structure with an iwan and minaret, forming an iconic visual group that is easily accessible via a flight of steps. This design not only enhances the mosque's aesthetic appeal but also provides a grand entrance for worshippers. Reddit

Visiting Etiquette and Practicalities

When visiting the King Saud Mosque, respectful attire is paramount. Visitors are expected to cover their shoulders and knees as a sign of respect for the religious nature of the site. While specific dress codes for tourists aren't always explicitly stated, adhering to modest clothing is a widely accepted practice in Saudi Arabia. Instagram

Friday visits require special consideration. Due to Friday prayers, which typically occur around 1 PM, public access to the mosque's interior may be restricted. It's advisable to plan your visit for other days of the week or to check local prayer schedules if you intend to visit on a Friday. Reddit

Even if interior access is limited, the exterior of the mosque is breathtaking and offers ample opportunities for appreciation and photography. Its roadside location ensures it's visible from various points, making it a constant, majestic presence in the city. Reddit
