What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Palolo Deep Marine Reserve to be a beautiful and affordable snorkeling spot, especially around the offshore buoy where vibrant corals and diverse fish are abundant. While some note stressed corals and basic facilities, the low entry fee and the chance to see rare species like Batfish make it a worthwhile visit for competent swimmers who time their visit for high tide and bring their own gear.
"Worth a visit. Lots of corals but they seem stressed from sediment deposit (probably from the nearby shipping activity). Spotted a couple of Bat fish which are pretty rare now. Avoid low tide as that makes it hard to pass over the shallow corals (like any reef really). Mid-tide is fine. Recommend taking your own gear as the operators were out of kit even though it didn't seem busy. To the operators - surely some extra kit would pay itself back within ~10 hires..."

"I was worried at first after reading some reviews saying it was dirty or disappointing, but it turned out to be absolutely beautiful. About 100 meters out, there’s a white buoy — around that area you’ll find stunning coral gardens and an incredible variety of fish. With sunlight, it looks even more magical.
It’s best to come at high tide, but within two hours before or after is still fine, though the water gets shallower and swimming can become tricky. You can rent equipment on-site, but I highly recommend bringing proper water shoes, as walking across the shallow seabed is difficult. The coral is very close to you, so please be careful and avoid damaging the fragile ecosystem.
Entrance is only $5 Tala, which is very cheap, but since it’s private land, the fee is the same whether you go in the water or just stay on the shore."

"Great snorkeling and low cost. Make sure to get out there with high tide. Ideally have fins or swimming shoes."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids

Understanding the Reef Ecosystem
Respecting the fragile ecosystem is paramount. The coral is very close to the surface in many areas, making it easy to accidentally damage it. Visitors are urged to be mindful of their fin kicks and body movements to avoid contact with the coral. This collective effort helps preserve the beauty of Palolo Deep for future generations. The reserve is a testament to Samoa's commitment to marine conservation, offering a glimpse into a thriving underwater world when treated with care.
While the deeper sections offer the most spectacular sights, the shallow areas near the coast provide a safe and accessible environment for children and less experienced swimmers. This allows everyone to appreciate the marine environment in a way that suits their comfort level. The low entrance fee makes this natural wonder accessible to a wide range of visitors, underscoring its value as a community and tourist asset.
Navigating Palolo Deep: Tides and Footwear
Footwear is another critical consideration. While gear rental is available, it's often limited, and bringing your own is highly advised. Crucially, water shoes are a must-have. Walking across the shallow seabed, especially when the tide is lower, can be difficult and uncomfortable without them. They protect your feet from sharp rocks or shells and help you navigate the reef more safely. Combining the right timing with the right gear will significantly enhance your visit to Palolo Deep.
