What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Fort Charles Sandy Point is a historically significant site with impressive exterior walls, but access is frequently restricted and the fort itself is in a state of disrepair with little apparent restoration. Visitors often find it closed or only viewable from the outside, leading to mixed experiences.
"Completely closef up and locked so you can only see from the outside. Quite impressive walls but the place is falling apart quite literally with no care or restoration underway."
Phil McC
"The Second Anglo-Dutch war was fought between 1665 and 1667. France became involved as it had a defensive alliance with Holland. In St. Kitts where the English and the French continued to share the island, the French attacked British fortifications and plantations. When the war was over, the island returned to being a shared space. The English dismantled their damaged gun placements near the northern French boundary and around 1674 started constructing Charles Fort to guard Sandy Point which was, by then, their main trading port. The Fort covered 4.2 acres and was surrounded by a defensive ditch. It was mostly completed by the late 1680s but the five bastions were still under construction in the 1730s. Enslaved laborer's from the plantations constructed it, maintained it and repaired it especially after the numerous battles and invasions that were fought on the island in its first 100 years of colonization.."

A Glimpse into History
What makes the history of Fort Charles particularly poignant is its construction. It was built, maintained, and repaired by enslaved laborers from the surrounding plantations. These individuals bore the brunt of the physical labor, especially after the numerous battles and invasions the island endured in the fort's early years. Understanding this context adds a layer of depth to the imposing stone structure.
Today, the fort stands as a reminder of this complex past. While its physical condition is a concern, its historical narrative remains compelling, offering a window into the strategic defenses and the human cost of colonial expansion.
Navigating Access and Condition
Furthermore, the fort is described as being in a state of significant disrepair. Reports indicate that the structure is literally 'falling apart' with little to no visible restoration or maintenance underway. While the scale of the walls can still be awe-inspiring, the lack of upkeep means visitors should temper expectations of a pristine historical site. Instead, be prepared to witness a monument that is slowly succumbing to the elements and time.
Some social media content suggests that an entry fee and online reservation system might be in place, requiring visitors to pay and obtain a QR code for access. However, this system's consistency and whether it guarantees entry are unclear, especially given the frequent closures. It is highly recommended to thoroughly research current access policies and opening hours through official channels before making any travel plans.
