Reviews Summary

Visitors find Bloody Point to be a site of significant historical interest, particularly for its connection to a pivotal battle and the presence of the dangerous Manchineel Tree. While some note there's not much to 'see' physically beyond a sign and the tree, the historical context provided by guides is highly valued. It's often visited as part of a larger island tour.

"Another stop on a road side that we never got out to look at (just a sign anyway). This was the area where the battle between the English & French troops had with the Kalinagos (Caribes). The tribes only had arrows and spears that were tipped with poison against the foreign troops' guns.

The poison came from the Manchineel Tree which is the most poisonous tree in the world. Everything on the tree is that way, so don’t even eat the green apples. Several soldiers died because of the poison. The antidote was actually salt water (per tour guide) but the soldiers never knew that.

The name comes from the story that the water turned red from all the Caribes that died during that war in 1629."

Daniel Grove

"We were on a minivan tour going all around the island. The van stopped at this spot and the driver spent time explaining the history. We were not able to get out of the van and there was really nothing to see. Just a bit of interesting history."

The History of Bloody Point

Bloody Point earns its name from a significant historical event: a fierce battle in 1629 between European colonizers (English and French) and the indigenous Kalinagos (Caribes). The Kalinagos, armed with only poisoned arrows and spears, faced the advanced weaponry of the foreign troops. The poison used was derived from the Manchineel Tree, a plant notorious for being the most poisonous in the world. Reddit

This battle resulted in heavy casualties, with the legend stating that the water turned red from the blood of the fallen Kalinagos. The Manchineel Tree's potent toxins caused many soldiers to die, and the antidote, saltwater, was unknown to them at the time. This historical context makes Bloody Point a site of solemn remembrance and a testament to the brutal encounters of the colonial era. Reddit

Visiting Bloody Point offers a chance to connect with this layered past. While the physical site might seem unassuming, understanding the narrative behind it enriches the experience. It's a place that prompts reflection on history, resilience, and the impact of environmental factors in conflict. Reddit

The Dangerous Manchineel Tree

The Manchineel Tree (Hippomane mancinella) is the star, albeit a dangerous one, of Bloody Point's historical narrative. It is widely recognized as the most poisonous tree on Earth. Every part of the tree—its sap, leaves, bark, and fruit—contains potent toxins that can cause severe harm upon contact or ingestion. Reddit

Historically, indigenous peoples utilized the tree's poisonous sap to tip their arrows and spears, making them formidable weapons against adversaries. The milky sap can cause blistering, severe skin irritation, and even blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes. Ingesting the fruit, which resembles a small apple, can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially fatal internal damage. Reddit

When visiting Bloody Point, it is absolutely crucial to heed all warnings and maintain a significant distance from the Manchineel Tree. Do not touch any part of it, and under no circumstances should you consume any of its fruit. Tour guides will emphasize this, and it's a vital safety precaution for anyone exploring the area. Reddit
