Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the Transfiguration Cathedral's historical significance as Yaroslavl's oldest stone building and its stunning, bright gold interior. The 16th-century frescoes are a major highlight, offering a glimpse into medieval Russian art. However, some find the exterior photography challenging due to surrounding modern structures.

"The Transfiguration Cathedral (early 16th century) is the oldest building in Yaroslavl. It was built on the foundations of the first cathedral, erected in the 13th century. The wall paintings of the cathedral were made in 1563-1564. It is difficult to take a photo of the cathedral itself - it is surrounded by later buildings, but this is also interesting. The bright gold interior of the cathedral was truly impressive."

"The Transfiguration Cathedral is the oldest building in Yaroslavl that has survived to this day. In the 16th century, it was one of two stone buildings in the city (the other was the Assumption Cathedral on Strelka); the other buildings were built of wood at that time.
The Spassky Cathedral as we see it today was built in 1515 or 1516 on the foundations of the first cathedral, which was erected in the 13th century and by the beginning of the 16th century had already fallen into disrepair and suffered from the city fire of 1501. It is unknown whether the cathedral collapsed during the fire or was simply badly damaged and dismantled - one way or another, there was a need to build a new church.
The architectural outlines of the modern Spassky Cathedral resemble the shapes of the Annunciation and Archangel Cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin. The reason is that the new church was built by Moscow craftsmen sent by Vasily III, the father of Ivan the Terrible. The monastery authorities turned to Vasily III because stone construction required very large sums of money: they had to pay not only for the purchase of stone, but also for taxes - for its use, extraction, transportation to the construction site, and so on. Vasily III not only gave money for the construction of the cathedral, but also sent a team of craftsmen, since no one in Yaroslavl knew how to build from stone. There is reason to believe that the authorship of the cathedral belongs to an Italian architect (possibly Venetian) - one of those who at that time was finishing work on the construction of the Moscow Kremlin. Most likely, he was not a "first-class" master, but certainly one of the best for that time."

"It is difficult to take a photograph of the cathedral. All around, everything is blocked by very unattractive buildings."
