What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently enchanted by the Nikolo-Vyazhishchsky Monastery's unique beauty, particularly its vibrant green tilework and fairy-tale-like architecture. The serene atmosphere and well-maintained grounds are frequently praised, offering a peaceful retreat. However, a common point of disappointment is the frequent closure of church interiors, limiting the full experience for many.
"Very beautiful and calm place. It is a pity we couldn't see it inside."

"The Nikolo-Vyazhishchsky Monastery complex, located 12 km from Novgorod, was restored after being destroyed during the military actions of the Great Patriotic War. The monastery is ancient, founded in the 14th century, but the buildings that have survived to this day date back to the 17th century.
This amazingly beautiful, very integral architectural complex, which includes several churches with passages, porches and stairs, amazes anyone who comes here. The ensemble is especially beautiful due to the multi-colored tiles that cover the facades of the Church of St. John the Theologian and the covered passage to the Nikolsky Cathedral, the main temple of the monastery, with a precious glow. This is an active convent.
The monastery is amazing, beautiful and looks like a cute and dear to the heart toy - you want to hug these domes and colored tiles. It is very comfortable to be on the territory, as if in a fairy tale. It is still not known exactly where the tiles for the Vyazhishchsky Monastery were made. Some researchers believe that, most likely, the luxurious mosaic for the Vyazhishchsky Monastery near Novgorod was ordered in Moscow, Yaroslavl or the Iversky Monastery in Valdai. Quite a few tiles from the 17th century were found during excavations in Novgorod.
There are currently two functioning churches in the Nikolo-Vyazhishchsky Convent: in honor of Euthymius, Archbishop of Novgorod, a miracle worker, and the Cathedral in honor of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, a miracle worker, which was restored and consecrated on May 19, 2000.
Unfortunately, we were unable to get inside, but our stay on this land itself has already filled us with joy and peace."

"The monastery was founded at the end of the 14th century. The Nikolsky Cathedral (1681-1683), the refectory with the churches of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian and the Ascension of the Lord (1694-1698), and the gallery connecting them with two front porches have survived. Tiles give the monastery buildings a special beauty and a bright distinctive feature. They are everywhere here. They are used as inserts on the galleries, they decorate the walls, frame the windows and doors, openings, and they are even on the drums of the domes of the churches. There are especially many of them on the walls of the refectory. The images on the tiles are varied: mainly geometric figures and flowers on the small tiles, while on the larger ones you can find a double-headed eagle, a lion, and even a unicorn. In general, lovers of detail will have something to do. Very beautiful. Clean and well-kept territory, lots of flowers and a pond with water lilies. We didn't meet any visitors for two hours, but unfortunately all the churches were closed. Try to visit this fabulous monastery. Taxi from the city center - 400 rubles."
