"A visit to the V.M. Peskov Voronezh State Nature Biosphere Reserve left me with extremely mixed feelings. On the one hand, this place is striking in its external splendor. The grounds are immaculately maintained: perfect paths, stylish buildings, beautiful information boards. It's clear that this is backed by extensive funding and human labor. The museum and the entire infrastructure look luxurious and modern.
But all this beauty instantly fades when you enter the so-called "beaverarium."
This is not a nature reserve. It's an animal prison. The animals, symbolic of this place, are kept in conditions that are heartbreaking. Beavers—large, freedom-loving river architects—are kept alone in tiny concrete enclosures, one and a half by two meters, behind thick metal bars.
The air is heavy and stuffy. Instead of clean river water, in which they should swim and dive, there are small concrete pools. The most terrifying thing is to realize that right outside the walls of this building flows the very same Usmanka River, their natural and vibrant habitat. And instead of observing them in the wild, visitors are offered to watch them imprisoned.
If you want to see a well-kept park and modern museums, this is the place. If you want to see real, happy beavers in their natural environment, living their lives to the fullest, this is not the place. It's a shame that such a beautiful "wrapper" conceals so much animal misery. Calling this a nature reserve for its main inhabitants is blasphemy. It's obvious that this place has decent funding; why they can't create normal conditions for the animals is absolutely incomprehensible."
