The stone echo of Stalingrad 🪖 - WW2 The city itself bore the name Stalingrad until 1961. Today it is called Volgograd - but the name Stalingrad lives on, indelibly linked to one of the cruellest battles in human history. It rises above the banks of the Volga near Volgograd like a memorial from another world: „Motherland calls!“, one of the largest statues in the world - and the symbol of one of ...

About Life

"You can't put in words how beautiful this place is. It's an amazing memorial that you won't ever forget in your life. Even though I live in Chicago, this is the city I was born in. It was previously named Stalingrad and from what any history will tell you is that the battle of Stalingrad was most likely the bloodiest battle during World War II. The River Volga was running red with blood. Almost every building in the city was completely leveled to dust. This memorial is a commemoration to those millions of Russian who have died during World War II. Overall the whole place is beautiful in and of itself. And it has an amazing atmosphere you won't forget. The statue is said to be the tallest and most grand female statue in the world. Just standing under it and looking up will give you a sense of how small you are compared to it. All of the statues there and even the cathedral is a beautiful and eye opening place. I would definitely recommend visiting."

"A great MUST Visit spot if you ever visited the city of Volgograd in Russia

The statue which is considered the biggest female statue in the world is in the center of the area which is full of other statues and other great things to see and have some lovely photos.

The spot is advised to be visited near sunset as its a long walk in the sun , and also best to do it to start it from up to down , not the other way round."

The Historical Significance of Mamayev Kurgan

Mamayev Kurgan is not just a monument; it's the site of intense fighting during the Battle of Stalingrad, a pivotal and brutal confrontation on the Eastern Front of World War II. The battle, which lasted from August 1942 to February 1943, was one of the bloodiest in history, with an estimated two million casualties. The Soviet victory here marked a major turning point, halting the German advance into the Soviet Union and beginning the Red Army's push westward.

The memorial complex was designed to honor the immense sacrifice of the Soviet soldiers and civilians who fought and died defending the city, which was then known as Stalingrad. The sheer scale of the monument, particularly 'The Motherland Calls' statue, is intended to convey the magnitude of the struggle and the unwavering spirit of the defenders.
