What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Pokrovsky Cathedral for its stunning, unique architecture and the deeply spiritual atmosphere within. Many find the vibrant colors and intricate icons visually captivating. However, some have encountered rude staff, and adherence to a strict dress code is essential for a respectful visit.
"One of the few places to look at in the city if you like religious places.
The area was nicer few years ago, before the government moved one of the major city universities that was across a street to the Russian Island. Now its a bit of a "silent hill" place with local shops, students, and local ppl being switched to hostels, hotels and single-use tourists from neighbour countries."

"I had very bad experience at the Pokrovskii Cathedral. I was seating on the chair inside of Pokrovskii Cathedral. One lady who was working for Pokrovskii Cathedral and wearing red knit sweater and winding her face with a scarf came to me and strongly grabbed my shoulder and pushed me to get out. At first i thought the chair wasn’t allowed to seat for visitors. However, i had found the reason why she made me get out. She just didn’t like that I was seating there with my legs crossed, so she pushed me to go out. I agree she might not happy the way i was seating there. However, i strongly don’t agree how she reacted. She shouldn’t have grabbed and pushed me without any speaking, even if she didn’t like the way i sit. And also she doesn’t have any right to let visitors go out, because it's not her own place. Obviously she was so rude. I really hope that she get educated to be qualified to work at Pokrovskii Cathedral. And also she has to know the way to communicate with other people with respectable way."

The History and Significance of Pokrovsky Cathedral
The cathedral's unique design is a departure from traditional Byzantine or Russian church architecture, featuring a riot of colors and patterns that were revolutionary for its time. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects after its completion so they could never replicate its beauty elsewhere, though this is likely apocryphal. Over the centuries, it has survived fires, wars, and Soviet-era threats of demolition, standing as a testament to Russia's enduring cultural heritage.
Today, Pokrovsky Cathedral is not only a major tourist attraction but also a museum. While it is no longer a primary place of active worship for a large congregation, occasional services are held, adding to its spiritual significance. Its presence on Red Square makes it a focal point for understanding Russian history and artistic achievement.
Navigating Visitor Experiences and Etiquette
Some visitors have reported negative interactions with staff, highlighting the importance of understanding and adhering to the rules. For instance, one reviewer mentioned being rudely asked to leave for sitting with crossed legs, emphasizing that while the cathedral is a tourist site, it remains a functioning religious institution. Being mindful of how you sit, stand, and move within the cathedral can contribute to a smoother experience for everyone.
Photography inside the cathedral can be restricted, and it's always best to check for signage or ask permission before taking pictures, especially during services. The overall ambiance is described as peaceful and awe-inspiring, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in religious art and architecture.
