What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Knyaginin Monastery for its serene atmosphere, beautiful gardens, and the historically significant frescoes within the Assumption Cathedral. Many appreciate the peacefulness and the opportunity to experience a slice of Russian spiritual heritage. However, some guests have found certain staff members to be less welcoming, and the strict photography rules can be a point of contention for those wanting to capture the art.
"An extraordinary monastry established in the twelfth century for the women. I saw a number of elderly religious sisters moving in the campus praying. For the war widows this Monastery gave asylum and they spent their life in prayer and charitable work. When the Mongols attacked this Monastery became destrhoyed and reconstructed. A beautiful Mosaic of the Madonna adorns the central place. A ladies hostel seems to be in the campus."

"Good day to all.
Today we were at the Holy Dormition Princess Monastery. The warmest impressions. A very cozy place.
A blessed service, passed in one breath. Mother Ambrosia gave a very interesting tour. The refectory has very tasty pies and herbal monastery tea.
I didn't want to leave."

"The monastery is very cozy, starting with the well-kept garden with lavender and vegetable plots behind the cells. We have been to Vladimir many times, but only this time we noticed this monastery. It is very significant for Russian spiritual culture, has a rich history and keeps amazing frescoes made by the capital's artel of Mark Matveyev. Granny in the pie shop was very nice, but mother Avramiya (a girl of about 40), sitting and watching the parishioners in the cathedral, was clearly not in the mood for blissful communication. I did not know that you can't film the frescoes on video (I turned on the flash without it), but as soon as I turned on the phone, she literally screamed. I asked what was so special about these frescoes, what was so special about them, but apart from the "lenten" expression on her face, nothing followed. Mother secretly watched everyone who entered the cathedral, which made being in the cathedral very uncomfortable. Then we read about the frescoes, looked at pictures on the Internet. But here's the question, since Mother is sitting, why doesn't she explain to the parishioners the meaning of the frescoes, tell them about their significance, convey the essence and value of the place? Unfortunately, grace and kindness rarely come from such women, as if they were forcibly imprisoned in a monastery. This is definitely not about love for God. And yes, for 100 rubles in a candle shop they turned on the light in the cathedral for us. Weak, but at least something."

A Glimpse into History
Over centuries, the monastery faced destruction and reconstruction, particularly during Mongol invasions. It was intended as a family burial vault for Vladimir Grand Duchesses and Princesses. The complex includes the significant Assumption Cathedral, built in the early 16th century, renowned for its frescoes from 1648. The monastery was eventually closed in 1923, and parts of it were later used as an atheist museum.
Today, visitors can explore the freely accessible Assumption Cathedral and admire its historical frescoes. The grounds are well-maintained, offering a peaceful atmosphere. While much of the complex is closed off, the visible parts still convey a sense of its historical and spiritual importance.
The Artistry of the Frescoes
Visitors are often struck by the beauty and detail of these ancient paintings. However, it's crucial to remember that photography of the frescoes is strictly prohibited to preserve their delicate nature. Respecting these rules ensures that future generations can also appreciate this artistic heritage.
While the frescoes are a major draw, some visitors have noted that information about their significance isn't always readily available from staff. This has led some to research them independently online after their visit, highlighting the importance of appreciating them with prior knowledge or through available informational materials.
