"The first attempt to build the Volga Bridge was made in 1938, based on a design by architect Ulanov, brother of the great Galina Ulanova. The original construction plan included the destruction of the Transfiguration Cathedral, which is now considered the main architectural decoration of Rybinsk. Fortunately, this idea was abandoned, and only the staircase, which Empress Catherine II once walked along, was sacrificed for the bridge. In order to attract labor, the city authorities called on Rybinsk residents to actively participate in the construction, so after the main work, thousands of people enthusiastically went to the construction site. But after a year of work, they only managed to cast the concrete supports of the future structure. The work was suspended by the Great Patriotic War. However, this difficult time proved that the city needed a bridge. Factories and plants worked for the needs of the front, the crossing over the Volga could not cope with the enormous load, and being late for work even for a few minutes was severely punished. In March 1943, an accident occurred at the crossing: an overloaded tugboat sank, taking hundreds of lives. Construction work was resumed only in 1955. By this time, the city already had an operating railway network and a military plant had been built. Therefore, everything needed for construction was manufactured in-house or transported by rail from Yaroslavl. A temporary wooden bridge was in operation at the same time. The original pre-war project was outdated, and a new one was developed that did not include the demolition of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Initially, the architects planned to use concrete to make the parapets, since metal was rarely used in such industries at the time. However, city leaders demanded that the parapets be cast from cast iron. The bridge construction work was carried out strictly according to schedule, so a grand opening ceremony was held in August 1963. After the red ribbon was cut, the first car ceremoniously drove along the new bridge. Interestingly, after this the bridge was not put into operation, since some more defects needed to be corrected, which took about another 2 years."

A Bridge Through Time: The History of Rybinsk Railway Bridge

The Rybinsk Railway Bridge is more than just a crossing; it's a testament to resilience and engineering ambition. The initial attempt to build this vital link over the Volga began in 1938, with a design that controversially considered demolishing the Transfiguration Cathedral. Thankfully, this plan was abandoned, though a historic staircase was sacrificed. Construction was halted by the onset of the Great Patriotic War, a period that underscored the urgent need for a robust river crossing. The existing temporary crossing struggled under the immense load of wartime industry, and a tragic accident in 1943, where an overloaded tugboat sank, claimed hundreds of lives, highlighting the bridge's critical importance. Reddit

Work resumed in 1955, with a revised design that preserved the cathedral. The bridge's construction was a significant local undertaking, with materials often sourced or transported via the very railway it would eventually carry. A temporary wooden bridge operated concurrently, ensuring continued river passage. The final design featured cast-iron parapets, a demand from city leaders, and after years of meticulous work, the bridge officially opened in August 1963, though final corrections took another two years. Today, it stands as a symbol of Rybinsk's enduring spirit and a key element of its urban landscape. Reddit

Experiment with wide-angle lenses to encompass the vastness of the river and the bridge's span, or use a telephoto lens to focus on the intricate details of the cathedral or the distant cityscape. Remember that the bridge is currently undergoing repairs, so while pedestrian access is available, be mindful of your surroundings and any temporary barriers. The area beneath the bridge, while sometimes showing signs of neglect, can also offer unique, gritty perspectives if approached thoughtfully. Reddit
