What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Dovmont Town for its significant historical importance and the evocative atmosphere created by the ancient church foundations. The Prikaznaya Palata is highlighted as a unique surviving structure. Some note the uneven terrain, emphasizing the need for comfortable footwear.
"Amazing place! A great history was made here. Alongside another independent northern state - the Republic of Novgorod, the Pskov's Land was the land of freedom.
This is the stone-made fortress that was built in the 13th century to strengthen the citadel and protect the settlement of Pskov."
Alexey Solovyov
"The place behind the Krom wall. In Pskov they don't call it the Kremlin, but Krom. It was named after Prince Dovmont, who reigned in Pskov for 33 years. Now there are the remains and foundations of ancient churches. There were about ten of them in this small place and they belonged to different communities of cities. The guide said that the frescoes from some of them are in St. Petersburg."
Роман Романов
"The initial development of this place dates back to the 8th century. In the 14th century, this territory was given the name Dovmontov Gorod, named after Prince Dovmont (ruled in Pskov 1266-1299). He is known as a talented military leader who repeatedly inflicted military defeats on the Lithuanians and Germans. During his reign, the city's administrative center was here, and a new fortress wall was built, called Dovmontova. One of the four fortress towers surrounding this territory has the same name. Dovmont died from wounds received while defending Pskov. He is buried here, in the Trinity Cathedral. For his state and military services, the prince was canonized in the 16th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, his clothes and battle sword were kept here. During the Great Patriotic War, a fascist anti-aircraft battery was located here. The churches of the Intercession and Nikola s Grebli were found and preserved on the territory of Dovmontov Gorod. The only functioning historical building on the territory of Dovmontov Gorod is the Prikaznaya Palata built in 1693. The wooden roofs of the Vlasyevskaya and Rybnitskaya towers were damaged in a fire in 2010."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Historical Significance of Dovmont Town
During its peak, Dovmont Town was densely populated with around 19 churches, likely serving as guild temples for various artisan and merchant associations. The western side housed princely mansions, while the southwest was dedicated to civil buildings managing industrial, merchant, and church affairs. Each temple had its own cemetery, contributing to the intricate urban fabric. By the 17th century, while the number of churches had reduced to 11, the administrative presence remained strong with structures like the Palace Prikaz and Prikaznaya Palata. Today, the visible church foundations and the Prikaznaya Palata offer a tangible connection to this rich past.
The area also holds significance for its military history. Prince Dovmont himself was a renowned military leader who defended Pskov against invaders. He is buried in the Trinity Cathedral, and his military prowess is a key part of the site's narrative. The Dovmontova Tower, a later addition, stands as a testament to the continuous fortification and architectural evolution of the area. The site's transformation from a bustling medieval center to its current state of preserved ruins is a compelling story of Pskov's enduring history.
Exploring the Ruins and Structures
The Prikaznaya Palata, built in 1693, stands as the sole functioning historical building within Dovmont Town. This structure offers a rare opportunity to see an intact example of the administrative architecture from the later period of Pskov's history. Its presence provides a concrete anchor amidst the ruins, showcasing the continuity of governance and administration in the area. Adjacent to the main Pskov Kremlin (Krom), the Dovmontova Tower is another notable structure. Built in the 19th century on the site of an older gate, its distinct 'European' appearance contrasts with other towers, reflecting evolving architectural styles and the site's ongoing strategic importance.
