What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Darwin Museum for its impressive and extensive collections, particularly the dinosaur exhibits and vast array of stuffed animals, making it a hit with families and nature lovers. While the visual displays are highly engaging, the limited English translations and an outdated section on human evolution have been noted as drawbacks by some.
"Really well done, great for kids, interesting for adults. Buying tickets online ahead of time is really convenient. It's best to get there before noon - it's always busy, but not bad in the morning. We spent about 1.5 hours, which was just enough to pretty quickly see everything. Our youngest (3 years old) couldn't do muchore than that, but older kids and adults can easily spend 2 or 3 hours taking in all the details.
Would have been 5 stars, but there's an absurd section on race justifying long debunked ideas of differences in humans based on skull shape, nose width, skin color, etc. Of course, white people are at the top of the chart in the display, not so subtlety reinforcing white supremacy.
I know it's a typically Californian thing to complain about, but it is really sad to see such outdated, racist ideas presented as fact a quarter of the way through the 21st century in an otherwise exceptional museum.
I still highly recommend visiting this museum; everything else in the 3 floors of exhibits is great!"

"A huge museum, I recommend you visit it early in the morning as it takes 3 hours to enjoy every bit of it. There are some explanations in English but most were just in Russian, therefore, I recommend having a guide with you. The museum closes at 18.00 so keep in mind to come early. There are toilets on the ground floor and a small ice cream shop."

"Nice museum. Huge collection of stuffed animals. A lot of aspects are presented from school biology lessons on advanced level. So, it would be very cognitive visit for students"

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider dedicating at least 2-3 hours to allow children to fully explore and absorb the exhibits. While most text is in Russian, the visual nature of the displays makes it accessible and engaging for younger visitors. Don't forget comfortable shoes for navigating the large museum space!
📚 Students and Biology Enthusiasts

It's an excellent place to supplement classroom learning with real-world examples of evolution and natural history. Visiting during off-peak hours will allow for more focused study and observation.

Exploring the Exhibits: A Journey Through Life
While the visual presentation is a strong point, a significant portion of the explanatory text is in Russian. This means that for visitors who don't speak Russian, the experience might lean more towards visual appreciation rather than deep textual understanding. However, the sheer scale and detail of the exhibits, particularly the taxidermy collection, make it a fascinating visit even without full comprehension of the text.
It's worth noting that some reviews mention an outdated and problematic section on human evolution and race. While the museum is otherwise highly recommended for its educational and engaging content, visitors should be aware of this specific exhibit.
Family Fun at the Darwin Museum
Many reviewers highlight that the museum is great for kids, with even a three-year-old finding enough to engage with, while older children and adults can easily spend several hours exploring. The hands-on 'investigate room' (which may incur an extra fee) can further enhance the interactive experience for younger visitors.
To make the most of a family visit, arriving early is crucial to avoid the peak crowds. Comfortable shoes are a must, as there's a lot of ground to cover. While the museum offers a small ice cream shop, packing some snacks and water can also be helpful for keeping little ones happy during a longer visit.
