What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique experience of floating in the salty, dark waters and the rejuvenating properties of the Tambukan mud, often describing it as a 'small sea' with magical water. However, the challenging access and difficulty in securing return transport are frequently cited drawbacks, alongside concerns about littering in the natural reserve.
"Today we went to Lake Tambukan. The water is dark and salty; you can float without sinking. The Tambukan mud is on the bottom, farther from the shore. It's not easy to reach with your hands; you need to bring a shovel, or better yet, a ladle. Then you'll have no problem. I recommend taking a container to scoop up the mud. In sunny weather, the mud dries quickly and starts to burn on you, which is quite pleasant. Then you walk into the lake and wash it off. Your skin feels soft and moist afterward, as if you've applied lotion. An interesting and useful place! The only downside is that it's hard to get there. We took a taxi from Pyatigorsk, but we couldn't get a taxi back; they wouldn't come. Thanks to the kind people who helped us out and got us out! I recommend not letting the taxi go; it's better to let it wait; it'll be cheaper."

"A beautiful, clean lake with salt water and therapeutic mud. Cosmetics and ointments are produced based on the extract from the mud of Lake Tambukan. I have already tried the cosmetics and was delighted. I took mud and mineral baths at the sanatorium and underwent a course of mud therapy."

"I'm speechless with delight. I lived 50 kilometers from this place for 17 years and had no idea there was a small sea here! The water there is truly seawater! It's very clean, of course, near the shore where everyone swims – it's murky and silted up, but if you swim about 20 meters from the shore, the water truly begins! You can get therapeutic mud from the bottom and smear it all over yourself, but I warn you – it's very difficult to wash off! So it's better to take some home, Google how to clean it, and smear it at home... Access is from Kabarda, from Zolskaya, and from Stavropol, if you're coming from the village of Pyatigorsk, from the new interchange (to Nalchik and Grozny), at the third forest belt on the left, there's a left turn, and then follow the gravel road for 2-3 km to the barrier (it's on the right, in the woods).
In conclusion: the place is very picturesque, the water is simply magical!!! I recommend everyone to visit!!!"

The Magic of Tambukan Mud
Collecting the mud requires a bit of effort. It's not easily accessible from the shore, so bringing tools like a shovel or ladle is highly recommended. Once applied, the mud dries quickly in the sun, which can create a pleasant warming sensation. However, this also means it can be challenging to wash off directly at the lake. Many travelers suggest taking some mud home to enjoy its benefits in a more controlled environment, researching the best cleaning methods beforehand.
The experience of mud therapy at Lake Tambukan is a unique natural spa treatment. It's a chance to connect with the earth's healing powers in a picturesque setting. While the logistics of getting there and managing the mud can be a bit challenging, the reported benefits for the skin make it a worthwhile adventure for many.
Navigating Access to Lake Tambukan
The final approach to the lake often involves gravel roads, and some access points may be blocked by barriers or concrete slabs, indicating it's a protected area. This means that depending on the route and current conditions, a standard car might struggle, and a vehicle with higher clearance or four-wheel drive could be beneficial. The effort involved in reaching the lake adds to the sense of adventure and discovery for those who make the trip.
It's also important to note that Lake Tambukan is situated within a state nature reserve. This designation means that certain activities, like hunting and fishing, are prohibited, and vehicle access might be restricted in specific zones. Being aware of these regulations and respecting the natural environment is crucial for a responsible visit.
The Unique Salinity of Lake Tambukan
The salinity contributes to the lake's distinct ecosystem and the properties of its mud. While the water itself is a draw, it's the combination of the salty water and the therapeutic mud that makes Lake Tambukan a special destination. The dark color of the water is also visually captivating, adding to the lake's mysterious allure.
When visiting, be prepared for the salty water. It can be quite drying to the skin and hair, so rinsing thoroughly after your swim is recommended. The salty environment also means that freshwater sources for drinking or washing are scarce, reinforcing the need to bring all necessary supplies.
