Reviews Summary

Visitors often praise the M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin Museum for its passionate guides and the immersive experience of exploring the writer's exile home. The atmosphere of the historic estate is frequently highlighted as a major draw. However, some find the tours less engaging or explanations unclear.

"September 27, 2025 (from St. Petersburg)
We stopped by the museum, frankly speaking, by chance; we were just passing by. We waited seven minutes for the previous tour to end, and then tour guide Nina Vadimovna began her story. It was a story, and one that spoke with great love for the museum where she works. The museum staff uncovered many interesting insights into the life of Saltykov (Shchedrin). A wonderful tour, with a highly professional guide. We were thrilled!"

"On my third day in Kirov, a rainy Palm Sunday, after visiting Alexander Green's house, I came here to pay my respects to the abode of my great compatriot, Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov.
The charming (even wearing a mask) museum director, Elena Yuryevna, with a brief introduction, focused my attention and handed me over to the audio guide.
The young freethinker spent more than seven years in exile in Vyatka. Here he became Shchedrin, handling controversial cases involving the Old Believers. And it was Natalya Nikolaevna Lanskaya (Goncharova-Pushkina) who helped him escape from exile to St. Petersburg through her husband's efforts.
I love the atmosphere of ancient, historic estates and house museums. Being here has a special charm!
Delightful!"
