"A great big landscaped forest park. Winding paths and endless descents and ascents under the crowns of old trees relieve your head from the city noise"

Сергей Васин

"I lived near Khimki Forest for a long time, and back then it was just a forest with paths and a spring. Then the M-11 highway divided it into parts, but recently it was transformed into a forest park. They built paths with a hard surface and a thin layer of fine gravel, which is easy for strollers, bicycles, and scooters to navigate, and probably even rollerblades. Walking and running will also be quite pleasant. They installed lighting and added security cameras. Benches and trash cans were installed. An enclosed dog park and a children's playground were created at different edges of the park. The spring area is still being improved. Part of the forest park along the M-11 has been left without paths for now - they left trails that are inconvenient for driving. Dogs also enjoy walking here. A few trees were cut down, but the felled trunks were beautifully laid along the edges of the paths, and it looks natural. On a sunny day, the paths provide plenty of beautiful shade. Birds are singing, and the forest greenery is pleasant. Unfortunately, the M-11 is quite noisy, but it's still quite pleasant. We'll see how it is in winter. There are no restrooms, baby rooms, or coffee shops here."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Transformation of Khimki Forest

Khimki Forest has undergone a significant transformation from a simple forest with paths and a spring into a modern forest park. This development includes the creation of hard-surfaced paths, improved lighting, and the installation of security cameras, enhancing the visitor experience and safety. The M-11 highway now divides the park, a notable change that has reshaped its landscape.

The renovations have focused on making the park more accessible and enjoyable for a wider range of visitors. The paved paths are designed to be easy for strollers, bicycles, and scooters, while also providing a pleasant surface for walking and running. Benches and trash cans have been added throughout, encouraging visitors to relax and maintain cleanliness. The inclusion of a dedicated enclosed dog park and a children's playground at different edges of the park caters to families and pet owners.

Despite the modernization, efforts have been made to retain a natural feel. Felled trees have been artfully arranged along path edges, blending with the environment. While the proximity to the M-11 highway means some traffic noise is present, the overall ambiance remains peaceful, with birds singing and pleasant forest greenery. The ongoing improvement of the spring area further adds to the park's natural charm.

Navigating Khimki Forest: Paths and Amenities

The park's network of winding paths is a key feature, offering varied routes for exploration. These paths are predominantly paved with a fine gravel layer, making them suitable for a variety of activities including walking, jogging, cycling, and using scooters or rollerblades. This accessibility is a significant draw for locals and visitors alike, providing a smooth and enjoyable experience.

While the park is well-equipped with essential amenities like benches for resting and trash cans to encourage tidiness, it's important to note the absence of public restrooms and cafes. Visitors should plan their trips accordingly, bringing their own water and snacks. The park also features distinct zones for recreation, including an enclosed dog park for pets and a children's playground, catering to different user groups.

For those seeking a more natural experience, some sections of the forest, particularly those further from the main developed areas or along the M-11 highway, may still retain unpaved trails. These can be less convenient for wheeled transport but offer a more rugged, natural feel for hikers. The park's layout, divided by the M-11, means visitors might need to navigate between sections depending on their desired route or destination within the park.
