What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find the Oltenia Museum to be an excellent and informative experience, particularly for understanding the history of the region. The affordability and the availability of English audio guides are frequently praised. However, some reviewers noted limited labeling and a sparse museum shop.
"This was a late minute visit as we were passing by. It only costs short of 2 euros per adult (8lei) and free for kids.
The museum is large and well organised chronologically. There are many interesting artifacts and good displays although some of the humans look a bit scary.
The labelling is not always as informative as it could be with limited information in places, it could be extended or reviewed for anyone who wants to know more.
The museum shop is also very limited I what it can offer. A lost opportunity for the town hall to make some money if they were a bit more creative."

"Ticket is 10 lei (Feb2025)- you can pay by card. The building of the museum is nice and well-heated; phone pictures are permitted (no flash).
Unfortunately, the pre-historic exhibition is no longer shown (other than the famous skull), as the museum suffered a flooding accident few years ago, so the artifacts got put in depository and due to current lack of funding, are not being restored.
Everything else-from Roman era to the Ceaușescu period is shown interestingly, albeit modestly. All the signs and texts (except the glass display) is only in Romanian."

A Journey Through Oltenia's Past
One of the most engaging sections within this building focuses on the Belle Epoque and the Soviet influence, providing insights into more recent historical periods that shaped modern Romania. While the museum is generally well-organized chronologically, some visitors note that labeling can be sparse or only in Romanian, making the availability of English audio guides a significant asset for a comprehensive understanding.
It's important to note that a past flooding incident has impacted some prehistoric exhibits, with artifacts now in storage due to funding challenges for restoration. Despite this, the museum offers a modest yet informative display that effectively documents the history of the Oltenia region and Craiova city.
Exploring Ethnography and Natural Sciences
The Natural Sciences Building complements the historical and cultural displays by showcasing the diverse flora and fauna of the Oltenia region. While specific details on the natural sciences exhibits are less prominent in reviews, these sections typically feature taxidermied animals, geological samples, and botanical displays that highlight the natural environment and biodiversity of the area. Together, these three buildings offer a holistic view of Oltenia's past and present, making the museum a comprehensive destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
