"The first secular monument in Cluj.
In 1817, the Austrian Empress Caroline Augusta, together with her husband Emperor Francis I, visited Cluj and other cities in this part of the empire. As a result of this visit, the city's inhabitants decided to begin the construction of this obelisk dedicated to the visit of the emperors. The project was suspended due to lack of funds, but was later realized thanks to a donation of 16,000 forints from the public prosecutor Imre Topler, who hoped that after the obelisk was completed, he would be granted the nobility he had requested.
Description of the images on the four sides:
- East (main side). Above: bas-relief of an angel holding a medallion with the portraits of Francis and Caroline Augusta. Below: bas-relief with the entrance to Cluj of the imperial procession through the gate of the Middle Street.
- South: bas-relief with the coat of arms of the city of Cluj (with three towers) from the 19th century.
- West: a bas-relief depicting the visit of the imperial couple to the city hospital in Cluj (Piata Muzeului no. 6, demolished in 1914). Caroline Augusta gives money to a beggar at the entrance to the hospital.
- North: a cast-iron inscription in Latin (recalling the visit of the imperial couple to Cluj).
At each of the four corners above the base of the obelisk is a statue of an eagle holding a forged laurel wreath in its beak."

Historical Significance and Symbolism
The monument's four sides are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs crafted by sculptor Iosif Kiebler. These detailed carvings depict key moments from the imperial visit, including the procession entering the city and the Empress's visit to the local hospital. Interestingly, one bas-relief mistakenly includes a gas lamp, an anachronism as this type of lighting was not yet introduced in Cluj at the time of the visit. At each corner, eagle statues holding laurel wreaths add a touch of grandeur and symbolism, representing strength and victory.
Beyond its immediate historical context, the obelisk also serves as a reminder of Cluj's past challenges, including food shortages and epidemics. The imperial visit, and the subsequent erection of the obelisk, brought a sense of calm and optimism to the populace. Today, it remains a charming landmark in the city's pedestrian area, inviting visitors to reflect on Cluj's history and the enduring human desire for a better life.
