Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the National Museum of Maps and Old Books as a hidden gem in Bucharest, lauded for its impressive collection of historical maps and the stunning architecture of its 1920s building. Many highlight the engaging interactive elements and the knowledgeable, friendly staff, making it a worthwhile and affordable experience for all ages. Some note its smaller size, but this is often seen as a positive, allowing for a focused and enjoyable visit.

"This museum is a gem and I recommend it on the top 5 for you to visit especially if you have children or if you are passionate about history, geography, culture, civilizations, languages, anthropology. Like other reviewers said the building is small but the architecture, interior design, beautiful location in Bucharest and the collections are worth your time. You would need 1-2h to enjoy it the most. I would recommend it for school age children or those of any age who are curious and passionate. The staff is knowledgeable and respectful. Ask them about any of the items to get clarification. I was hooked on an old map about the Celts.

Being born in Romania and familiar with our history it was a joy to see with the eyes and mind of an adult what I've learnt in Romanian school, read in books or heard over decades and fill gaps or see with my own eyes old documents.

Tip:
Usually when we planned our stay in Bucharest we visited two museums a day plus enjoyed the historical centre and lovely parks."

Andrea Petrut

"Excellent museum, one of the best I have visited lately. The building is very pretty, and it's been built in the 1920s. The maps collection is amazing, and it dates back from the 16th century. The entrance fee is cheap, only 16 lei. I have lost myself into the variety of maps and historical information. The place is very well maintained, and the people working there are friendly and knowledgeable. This is the best place I have visited so far in Bucharest, don't miss it! I'll get back for sure."

Andreea Olariu

"One of the most impressive things were in fact not the maps, but the painted ceilings. I've also enjoyed the statues of the most famous world explorers from Mercator to Polo.

This month was also a special exhibition of the Romanian anti-communist post-war history. Special credit for the interactive map room. Anything visually interactive is always pleasant to the eye.

It has 2 floors and the entrance was 10 lei. The total visit would be under one hour. There's also a gift shop."
