What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the National Museum of Romanian Aviation to be an affordable and interesting destination, particularly for its diverse collection of aircraft, including rare outdoor displays. While the indoor exhibits are well-maintained, the outdoor planes and artillery could benefit from restoration. The museum's remote location and limited English translations are noted drawbacks, but many feel it's worth a visit for aviation enthusiasts and photographers.
"Its closed. The whole site is being redeveloped into glass and steel office blocks and flats. Its supposedly going to reopen but just looking around tells you this will never happen."
Miles Gladson
"You can see here helicopters, fighter jets and old memorabilia connected to aviation history. There are 2 large hangars in which the exhibits are well kept, the stuff that is kept outside could use a new repainting. You can easily spend an hour or two here. Worth a visit if you can get there, it's a bit off the beaten track for tourists. This time off the year it's open from 9 to 15:30 with 14:30 last entry. Tickets cost 10 Ron for adults and half for children, the soldier at the gate said my daughter could enter free of charge."
Roman Adrian
"This is a very nice museum that is quite young. It is only about 20 years old. The outside displays are still in need of restoration in some cases, but the displays inside the museum building are very well done."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the outdoor exhibits might show some wear and tear, this can add to the adventure. Encourage kids to imagine flying the planes or operating the artillery. Consider focusing on the more visually striking aircraft like helicopters and fighter jets to keep their attention. It's a good idea to manage expectations regarding interactive exhibits, as these are limited, but the visual spectacle alone can be a hit.
✈️ Aviation Enthusiasts & History Buffs
While the museum may not boast the extensive resources of larger international institutions, its collection is noteworthy. Pay attention to the details within the hangars and the historical context provided, even if English translations are sometimes sparse. The outdoor exhibits, despite their condition, offer a raw and authentic display of aviation machinery that can be appreciated by seasoned enthusiasts.
📸 Photographers

A Glimpse into Romanian Aviation History
Reviews suggest that the museum's collection includes a diverse range of aircraft, from World War II-era planes to more modern helicopters and jets. The presence of a B-24 Liberator, a significant heavy bomber, is a notable highlight for aviation enthusiasts. The museum also touches upon broader military history with displays of ground vehicles and artillery.
Despite its historical significance, the museum faces challenges. Some visitors note that the outdoor exhibits could benefit from restoration and repainting, which, while detracting from a pristine appearance, can add a unique character for photographers. There's a community sentiment that the museum needs investment to thrive and better share Romania's aviation heritage with the public, including more interactive elements and comprehensive English translations.
Navigating the Museum's Exhibits
The outdoor section is vast and features a variety of aircraft, including fighter jets and helicopters, alongside artillery pieces. While these exhibits are impressive in scale and historical context, some reviewers point out that they are exposed to the elements and could use a fresh coat of paint. This condition, however, can be seen as an advantage for photographers seeking a more rugged and authentic aesthetic.
For a more engaging experience, there's a desire for more interactive elements, such as allowing the public to try out simulators. This would undoubtedly enhance the appeal for families and younger visitors, making the museum a more dynamic destination. Planning your visit to allow ample time for both indoor and outdoor exploration is recommended to fully appreciate the collection.
