What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Laguna Grande Biobay tours are highly polarized. Many visitors rave about the magical bioluminescent experience and knowledgeable guides, calling it a must-do. However, a significant number of reviews warn of scams, poor communication, and tours not showing up, leading to disappointment and financial loss.
"This is a complete scam. Do not fall for it. They're going to say that they're full but they're gonna fit you in then some guy is going to call you and try to scam you out of money on cashapp. They kept calling to try to entice us into paying the money. We smelled a rat as soon as the guy said that he wanted payment through cash app. We told him that we weren't comfortable with that and could pay cash. He then told us to meet his friend at some random house at 9:30 pm. We went out to the "place of business" out of curiosity and there was nothing there. You might lose your money or get hurt dealing with this "business". Beware. The "owner" also has the audacity to come on here to argue with the people he scammed and post clearly fake reviews."
Devon Pierre
"Unfortunately, we were unable to visit due to the large amount of seaweed in the bay during our planned time. I cannot speak for the actual excursion, but the company did refund me 100% of the costs since we could not go. If we ever come back we will definitely book again and try to see the bioluminescence!"

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Laguna Grande is located in Fajardo, on the east coast of Puerto Rico. Most visitors drive or take a taxi/rideshare from San Juan, which is about a 45-60 minute drive. Parking is available near the tour operators' meeting points.
Public transportation to Fajardo is limited and can be time-consuming. Renting a car or booking a tour that includes transportation is generally recommended for convenience.
Many tour operators offer pick-up services from major hotels in San Juan and the surrounding areas, which can simplify logistics significantly.
Yes, tour operators will provide a specific meeting point, usually near the entrance to the biobay area or their office. Always confirm this location beforehand.
The drive from San Juan to Fajardo typically takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic conditions.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Tickets are best booked in advance through reputable tour operators. Be cautious of unsolicited calls or requests for payment via Cash App, as these can be scams.
Tour prices can vary, but typically range from $50-$70 per person. Some operators may require a deposit and the balance on the day of the tour.
Generally, tours are suitable for most ages, but kayaking requires some physical ability. Check with your tour operator for specific restrictions.
The intensity of the bioluminescence varies. While tours usually proceed, some operators may offer refunds or rescheduling if conditions are exceptionally poor, though this is not guaranteed.
It is highly recommended to book in advance. On-site availability is rare, and you risk missing out or encountering unreliable vendors.
🎫 ✨ Onsite Experience
You'll typically paddle in a kayak or electric boat through mangrove channels to the bay. Guides will explain the science behind the glow and encourage you to interact with the water to see the light.
Reputable tour operators prioritize safety. Guides are experienced, and kayaks are stable. Stick with your group and follow instructions for a safe experience.
Swimming is generally not permitted in Laguna Grande due to conservation efforts and the nature of the tour. The focus is on observing the bioluminescence from your kayak or boat.
Tours usually start after sunset, around 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM, and continue into the evening. Visiting during a new moon phase will offer the darkest skies for the best glow.
Most biobay tours last between 1 to 1.5 hours, including the time spent kayaking to and from the bay, and observing the bioluminescence.
📸 📸 Photography & What to Bring
No flash photography is allowed, as it disturbs the bioluminescent organisms and the experience for others. Long exposure shots might be possible with advanced camera settings, but it's challenging in a kayak.
Bring insect repellent, a towel, a change of clothes (if you get wet), and a waterproof bag for essentials like your phone (if you must bring it).
It's very difficult to capture the glow effectively with standard phone cameras due to low light and movement. Focus on experiencing it rather than capturing it.
Wear dark, comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little wet. Avoid bright colors. Water shoes or sandals are recommended.
A small, dim flashlight might be useful for navigating to the meeting point, but avoid using it once you are on the water or near the bay.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Key considerations: Bring plenty of insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be bothersome. Explain to children beforehand that flash photography is not allowed to manage expectations. The wonder of seeing the water light up with movement is often captivating enough for kids, making it a memorable adventure.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider visiting during the week rather than on weekends or holidays, as prices can sometimes be higher during peak times. If you're renting a car, factor in parking costs. The experience itself is priceless, but smart planning can help manage expenses.
💖 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Pack a light jacket as evenings can be cooler, and enjoy the shared wonder of this natural phenomenon. It's a perfect activity for couples looking for something extraordinary and memorable during their Puerto Rican vacation.

Understanding Bioluminescence
Factors influencing the glow's intensity include the moon phase (new moon is best), water temperature, and recent rainfall. Heavy rains can sometimes dilute the concentration of dinoflagellates or wash in sediment, affecting visibility. Many visitors find the experience most profound during the darkest nights, away from any light pollution.
While often described as 'glowing,' it's more accurately a 'luminescence' – light produced by a chemical reaction within the organisms. It's a natural wonder that has captivated visitors for years, offering a unique connection to the marine ecosystem.
Navigating Tour Operators and Avoiding Scams
Red flags to watch out for include: pressure to pay via untraceable methods like Cash App, vague meeting instructions, or a lack of a clear business presence. If a company insists on meeting at a random house or demands payment outside of standard booking platforms, it's a significant warning sign. Always verify the company's legitimacy and read recent reviews.
If you encounter issues, try to resolve them directly with the tour operator first. If that fails, contact your credit card company or bank to dispute the charge. Document all communication, including screenshots of messages and payment requests, to support your claim.
The Kayaking Experience
Once you reach the open bay, the magic truly begins. Paddling gently or trailing your hand in the water will reveal the glowing plankton. The experience is often described as surreal and enchanting. Some tours also use electric boats, which offer a less physically demanding option, though the interaction with the water might be less direct.
Tips for a better kayaking experience: Wear comfortable, quick-drying clothes and water shoes. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone (if you choose to bring it, but be prepared for difficult photography) and any other essentials. Be prepared for potential mosquito bites and bring repellent.
