What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ulpiana Archaeological Park is lauded as a precious treasure of Kosovo's ancient heritage, offering a glimpse into a once-thriving Roman city with deep Illyrian-Dardanian roots. Visitors appreciate the free entry, vastness of the site, and the historical significance. However, the lack of shade, especially during summer, and limited facilities are noted drawbacks.
"Ulpiana is one of the most precious treasures of Illyrian and Dardanian history, and an unforgettable place for anyone who respects the deep roots of Kosovo’s civilization.
Founded as a Roman municipium in the 2nd century AD, but with Illyrian-Dardanian origins long before, Ulpiana was once a powerful and prosperous city — a center of culture, trade, and faith. Its strategic location made it a jewel of Dardania, where local Illyrians embraced and enriched Roman traditions.
After a devastating earthquake in the 6th century, Emperor Justinian I rebuilt it and renamed it Justiniana Secunda. Sadly, in the following century, Slavic invasions ravaged the city, burning Ulpiana to the ground. Despite this, the spirit of the city never fully disappeared.
In fact, even centuries later, the incredible craftsmanship of Ulpiana’s stones was so respected that they were reused in the building of the Gračanica Monastery. Many of the lower walls of Gračanica are made from Ulpiana’s ancient gravestones — and if you look carefully, you can still see Latin epitaphs embedded in the monastery today.
Walking through Ulpiana today is like stepping through time. You can see the layout of the basilicas, the city gates, the defensive walls, and imagine the life that once thrived here. It is a site that deserves far greater international attention, preservation, and funding.
Ulpiana is not just an archaeological park — it is a living testimony of the Illyrian-Dardanian spirit, and a place every visitor to Kosovo should experience with reverence.
I hope that in the future, more support will be given to uncover and restore Ulpiana to its rightful place as one of Europe’s most important ancient cities.
Truly a hidden gem of our ancient heritage."

"It is a nice place to visit when travelling to Gracanica. I like that there are benches for one to sit and enjoy the site, as well as several hills that provide a good elevated view to the site. I only fear that summer is a bad choice to visit the place, since it has no shade."

"When we arrived no one was overlooking the site. However, entrance is free anyway. The archeological site is what's left (and partially reconstructed) from the Roman ancient town of Ulpiana. You can learn the history of the place from the signs. At the back of the site lives a friendly dog family."
