The Discovery and Geological Story
The cave system, located in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, is a testament to the power of geological processes. Over thousands of years, water has dissolved the soluble rock, creating intricate passages, chambers, and a breathtaking array of stalactites and stalagmites. These formations, often named after the shapes they resemble – such as the 'Shepherd's Chamber' or the 'Lake of Happiness' – are the stars of the show.
After its discovery, the cave underwent careful exploration and preparation, with the involvement of geologists and speleologists, before opening to the public in 1974. Today, visitors can safely explore these subterranean galleries on a guided tour, learning about the cave's history, geology, and the delicate ecosystem it harbors.
