What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pena Palace is widely praised for its stunning, colorful architecture and beautiful parkland, offering breathtaking views. However, many visitors find the experience can be marred by overwhelming crowds and long queues, especially if not visiting early or booking tickets in advance. Some suggest the interior can feel rushed and overcrowded, with the exterior and gardens being the main draw for many.
"The National Palace of Pena is a vibrant masterpiece that seems plucked straight from a storybook. Perched high on a hilltop in Sintra, its bold colors—sunset yellows, deep reds, and sky blues—make it one of the most visually striking palaces in Europe. The mix of architectural styles—Romantic, Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline—reflects Portugal’s rich and diverse history.
Inside, the rooms are beautifully preserved, offering a glimpse into royal life with ornate furnishings and stunning tile work. The panoramic views from the palace terraces are breathtaking, stretching across forests and toward the Atlantic Ocean.
It can get crowded, especially in peak season, so booking in advance is smart. Still, nothing takes away from the magic. Pena Palace is a must-visit—whimsical, majestic, and truly unforgettable.
You need to take a bus or taxi. There is no parking spot available. Also, 2 - 3 mins walk from the gate you can get a but that will take you directly to the castle. Its optional, you can also walk up to there. Form Pena castle you get a great view of the Moorish castle."

"Simply lovely! A wonderful place to take a hike. Loved the vivid colors and the cool architectures. The view from the top of the building is also amazing! Though be careful the wind could be quite strong on the top of the hill, and if you have a fear of height maybe not challenge yourself with the walk outside around the castle (if not, then definitely try it! so cool!). The wait to enter the building is crazy long though, better plan your trip in advance! Definitely cool place!"

"Absolutely stunning and mind-blowing views. This place is truly one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever been to. You definitely have to be early, as we showed up half an hour early and the queues had started to form (at 8:00), however it is totally worth it for the incredible experience that is the castle. I'd also recommend getting the fast track, and maybe even on the earliest slot, as we were lucky enough to be the first people into the palace, and we were 5 minutes ahead of everyone without the fast track. This space made the perfect opportunity for photos and just soaking up the palace as a whole. It certainly gets busy, but this is a once in a lifetime trip 100% worth doing."
