What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Praia do Telheiro is lauded as a stunning hidden gem with dramatic cliffs and excellent surf. Visitors appreciate its secluded atmosphere and natural beauty, though the steep access and cold water are noted drawbacks. It's a place for those seeking a more rugged, less developed beach experience.
"What a fantastic hidden gem of a beach, out of the wind and an incredible surf spot. We had a lovely afternoon chilling here and went for a nice breakers bath in the choppy sea, the water was cold though, guessing because it’s on the Atlantic, and to think it’s nearly the end of June…
Don’t be surprised to see a little bit of nudity though, if you’re prude or have kids this might not be the beach for you.
The climb down is quite steep to, so if your not fully able, maybe try of the other lovely beaches on offer in the area."

"Great private beach, but quite windy. The trail is steep but was manageable and fun to the the beach to ourselves."

"A beautiful beach, especially for surfing. There are much nicer beaches for swimming alone. You can go hiking along the coast / cliffs. On some days it can be extremely windy here, you might want to check the weather app. The road access is a little offroad but very easy for every car."

Navigating the Terrain: Accessing Praia do Telheiro
For those with mobility challenges, the steepness of the trail might make Praia do Telheiro a less suitable option. It's important to assess your physical capabilities before embarking on the descent. The reward for this effort, however, is a sense of discovery and a more private beach experience. Many visitors find the hike to be part of the adventure, contributing to the feeling of finding a hidden gem.
Once you reach the beach, the terrain is mostly sand and rocks. The dramatic cliffs that surround the cove offer a sense of enclosure and protection from some of the wind, though it can still be quite breezy given its Atlantic exposure. Be prepared for a rugged, natural environment rather than a manicured resort beach.
The Atlantic's Embrace: Water and Waves
The powerful Atlantic swells create dynamic conditions. For swimmers, this means being mindful of the waves and currents. While some enjoy a refreshing dip, others find it more suited for a quick splash rather than extended swimming sessions. The choppy sea can be exhilarating but also requires a certain level of comfort with wave action.
If you're not a surfer, you can still appreciate the raw power of the ocean. Watching the waves crash against the shore and the dramatic cliffs is a spectacle in itself. The sound of the waves and the vastness of the ocean contribute to the serene and somewhat wild atmosphere of Praia do Telheiro.
Capturing the Essence: Photography at Praia do Telheiro
The best time for photography is undoubtedly during the golden hour, especially at sunset. The way the light hits the cliffs and the ocean can create truly magical scenes, painting the sky with vibrant hues. Even during the day, the contrast between the golden sands, the blue ocean, and the ochre cliffs provides ample opportunities for striking shots. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to encompass the grandeur of the landscape.
Beyond the grand vistas, the details also offer photographic appeal: the textures of the rocks, the patterns of the waves, and the resilient coastal flora. Whether you're using a professional camera or just your smartphone, Praia do Telheiro offers endless inspiration for capturing the raw beauty of Portugal's coast.
