Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, convenient parking, and available facilities like restrooms and a snack bar. Some note the sand gets very hot under the sun, and water temperature can vary.
"A peaceful beach with warmer water thanks to nearby thermal springs surfacing in the bay. The area is quiet and clean, with sun umbrellas, a lifeguard on duty, and a fast food spot close by. There's also a clean public restroom with a changing area. The sand is soft, clean, and free of shells or seaweed — perfect for a relaxing day by the sea."

"This is a beautiful sandy beach located right next to a large parking lot, which makes access very easy. There are free public toilets and showers available, as well as a snack bar for refreshments. When we visited on a weekday in May, the beach was almost empty, so it felt very peaceful and spacious. The beach itself is quite large, so don’t worry about finding a spot to relax. The sea was a bit cold, but still refreshing. One thing to note: the black sand gets extremely hot under the sun—so hot that it’s almost impossible to stand on it barefoot!"

The Magic of Geothermal Waters
This geothermal heating is a direct result of the volcanic nature of the Azores archipelago. The underground heat from volcanic activity warms the groundwater, which then seeps into the ocean. While the entire bay isn't uniformly hot, there are areas where the warmth is particularly noticeable, especially if you bury your feet in the sand near the water's edge. It's a fascinating natural phenomenon that adds a unique dimension to the beach experience, offering a comfortable and inviting environment for relaxation and recreation.
Travelers often express surprise and delight at the warm water, especially when visiting during cooler months. It transforms the beach from a place for sunbathing only to a viable swimming destination. This makes Praia do Fogo a standout attraction for those seeking a more comfortable and unique coastal experience in the Azores.
Navigating the Black Sand
However, this beautiful black sand comes with a practical consideration: it gets extremely hot under the sun. Visitors frequently warn that walking barefoot on the sand during midday can be almost unbearable. To fully enjoy the beach without discomfort, it's highly recommended to wear sandals, flip-flops, or water shoes. This simple precaution will allow you to walk freely to and from the water and explore the beach without any issues.
Despite the heat, the unique texture and color of the sand are a significant part of the beach's appeal. It offers a different aesthetic than typical golden sand beaches and contributes to the dramatic, almost otherworldly landscape of the Azores. Embracing this characteristic, and being prepared with appropriate footwear, ensures a comfortable and enjoyable visit to this stunning volcanic beach.
