Please remember to respect nature here: don’t climb or damage the centuries-old trees, and leave the area as pristine as you found it. The ancient laurel forest, often wrapped in mist, creates a fairytale-like scenery that feels timeless.
The small lagoon and the open meadows contrast beautifully with the twisted old trees, making it perfect for a quiet walk, a picnic, or simply soaking in the views.

"Fanal Forest is an absolutely unique spot on Madeira – trees shrouded in fog create an incredible, almost fairy-tale atmosphere. It is the perfect place for photos and a peaceful walk in nature. Many people look for the famous “Instagram tree,” which can be a challenge, especially in the fog. However, all you have to do is turn left from the parking place – there you will find the most famous and most photographed tree."

"A much quieter and less touristy place than Fanal, yet still very interesting. I guess some trees seem even older than those in Fanal, judging by their trunk size. You can take a short walk around the small lake, which takes only a few minutes, but it is definitely worth it. When we visited, we were alone most of the time. Parking is not a problem, you can park your car right next to the place."

The Magic of the Laurisilva Forest
When visiting, it's crucial to remember the ecological significance of this forest. Many of the trees are centuries old and incredibly fragile. Visitors are strongly encouraged to stay on designated paths where available and avoid touching or climbing the trees. The goal is to preserve this unique ecosystem for future generations. The contrast between the dense, ancient forest and the open, serene lagoon is what makes Lagoa do Fanal so captivating and a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
The 'Instagram tree' is a prime example of the forest's unique character. Its distinctive shape and often mist-shrouded appearance have made it a popular subject for photographers. However, the entire forest offers countless opportunities for stunning imagery, from close-ups of moss-covered bark to wide shots of the misty landscape. The feeling of peace and timelessness here is palpable, offering a profound connection with nature.
Experiencing the Mist and Atmosphere
To best experience this unique atmosphere, visiting in the early morning is highly recommended. This is when the mist is typically thickest, shrouding the landscape in an ethereal veil. The light filtering through the fog creates a soft, diffused glow, perfect for photography and for simply soaking in the serene ambiance. Even if the mist isn't heavy, the forest itself possesses a quiet, ancient charm that is deeply calming.
While the mist is a highlight, it also means the ground can be damp and slippery. Wearing appropriate footwear with good grip is essential for navigating the area safely. The cool, moist air adds to the sensory experience, making it a refreshing escape from the warmer coastal areas of Madeira. The feeling of being enveloped by nature in such a unique way is what draws many visitors back to Lagoa do Fanal.
