"A antiga igreja matruz da Póvoa de Varzim, foi a causa do aparecimento da Santa Casa de Misericórdia e evitou-se a destruição do velho templo. A Igreja era feita sem naves nem outro artifício e há dentro dela quatro irmandades ou confrarias , a do Santíssimo Sacramento no Altar Mor; a segunda a Senhora do Rosário no altar colateral da parte do Evangelo; a terceira com o none de Deos e dos Santos Passos no altar do Cruzeiro da parte do Evangelho; e na outra capelada parte da epístola a confraria das Almas, no século XVIII. Antes desta igreja existia uma capela invocando o Apóstolo S. Tiago, cuja imagem se conserva num altar, junto ao lugar das caveiras. Ao lado existia o cemitério. Em 1685 a igreja foi aumentada. Em 1715 a igreja matriz passou para um novo edifício e a Misericórdia ficou de posse da antiga igreja. A mesa em exercício de 1905 a 1907, deliberou construir nova igreja que tem o traço do arquiteto portuense Peres Guimarães. A obra de pedreiro terminou em 1913. A igreja ficou concluída em finais de Julho de 1914."
