What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Teatro Nacional São João Porto's guided tours for their thoroughness and value, offering access to backstage areas and insightful historical context. However, some find the seating uncomfortable and the policy against bringing water bottles to be inconvenient.
"Great tour. As there were no Portuguese speakers on the tour, the guide conducted it in English for us ( otherwise an audio tour would have been provided).
We got to see backstage areas, costumes, the rigging, front of house and the auditorium. The tour was really thorough and informative. Good value for €10."

"This is the leading center for theatrical arts in northern Portugal. Originally opened in 1798 as the Real Teatro de São João, it was Porto’s first official theater. After being completely destroyed by fire in 1908, the current Neoclassical building was constructed in 1911, based on a design by José Marques da Silva. In 1992, it was officially designated a national theater by the Portuguese government. Throughout the 20th century, the theater served as a major venue for Portuguese drama, opera, and literary performances, cementing its cultural significance in the national arts scene."

"This theater offers tours most days @ 12:30 and it is magical. We got to see the rehearsal rooms, to the fly gallery above the stage all the way to underneath the stage. I highly recommend it. I went in may 2024 and it was €10. The only (slight) inconvenience was that the tour was done in portuguese and I had to follow along with an audio guide. I generally don't mind that except it was very obvious the portuguese version got extra fun facts. Regardless, I really enjoyed the tour!"
