Reviews Summary

Salto do Cabrito is a beautiful waterfall with a unique industrial backdrop, offering both a scenic view and a refreshing swimming spot. While some find the hike challenging or the facilities limited, driving closer and wearing water shoes enhances the experience. The steep path and potential crowds are noted, but the natural beauty is consistently praised.

"PLEASE NOTE!! The hike to this waterfall is really long and difficult. If you are really afraid of heights DO NOT take the hike tour. We were not able to finish it as it was so challenging.
Online is it marked as a hike of 7,5km, but it is 8,4km and for the most part you will be walking on the street. It was not pleasant, not easily marked and we do not recommend it.
You can also drive to the waterfall, that would be more pleasant for most. The small part of the hike that takes you through the forest is nice though.
P.s. the bridge on the picture is quite high and the person walking behind us was not a fan of heights and did not want to cross the bridge, so keep that in mind."

"You can’t go all the way down so you need to park your car and travel by foot. Steep paved road going down & back up (which is the hardest part). But it’s doable so don’t worry too much about that. No toilets, no place to change into your swimsuit. Only a little pineapple seller was there. It was quite crowded, and there were people who were doing some adventure climbing down the waterfall which ofcourse made the nice scene a little less nice. Make sure you wear watershoes, the rocks can be slippery! Swimming is nice, you can touch the ground everywhere except for close to the waterfall. Lovely place!"

"An excellent and very easy hike. The waterfall is simply beautiful, even in this depleted version, when a large part of its water is taken away by the hydroelectric power plant. For those who want a little more adventure, there is the possibility of climbing to the top of the waterfall on a very steep hike."

Reddit

However, parents should be aware of the steep paved road down to the waterfall, which might be challenging for very young children or those with mobility issues. Reddit Ensure kids wear appropriate footwear, especially if they plan to get near the water, as the rocks are slippery. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Terrain: Hike vs. Drive

Salto do Cabrito presents a choice in how you reach its beauty. While some online descriptions mention a 7.5km or 8.4km hike, many reviews clarify that this often involves walking along paved roads, which can be less enjoyable than expected. Reddit For those seeking a more direct and less strenuous approach, driving closer to the waterfall and then descending a steep paved road is the preferred method. This significantly reduces the walking distance and effort required. Reddit

However, be prepared for the steepness of this paved descent and ascent. It's described as the hardest part by some, but still considered 'doable' for most. Reddit If you opt for the longer hike, ensure you're aware of the road walking involved and that it might not be the immersive nature experience you anticipate. Reddit Always check local conditions and consider your fitness level when deciding on your approach.

Embracing the Water: Swimming and Safety

The pool at the base of Salto do Cabrito offers a refreshing opportunity for a swim. However, safety and preparation are key. The rocks around the water's edge can be quite slippery, making water shoes a highly recommended item for anyone planning to enter the water or even just walk near it. Reddit While you can touch the ground in most areas, it's wise to be cautious, especially closer to the waterfall itself. Reddit

It's important to note that there are no dedicated changing facilities or restrooms at the waterfall site. Reddit Visitors should plan accordingly, perhaps by wearing swimwear under their clothes or bringing a towel for a quick dry-off. The presence of people engaged in adventure climbing down the waterfall can also add a dynamic element to the scene, though it might detract from the tranquility for some. Reddit

The Unique Landscape: Nature Meets Industry

Salto do Cabrito is notable not just for its natural beauty but also for its proximity to a hydroelectric power plant. This industrial element, located right next to the cascading water, creates a striking visual contrast. Reddit While a large portion of the waterfall's water is diverted for power generation, the remaining flow still creates a beautiful spectacle. Reddit This juxtaposition offers a unique photographic opportunity, blending the raw power of nature with human engineering. Reddit

For those interested in the technical aspects, the presence of the power plant adds another layer of interest to the visit. It's a reminder of how natural resources are harnessed and can be a point of discussion for visitors. The scene is a testament to the diverse landscapes found on São Miguel island, where natural wonders often coexist with human infrastructure.
