Campo de São Francisco, the largest and most iconic square in Ponta Delgada, owes its name to the Franciscan convent built there in the early 16th century. Construction of the Convento de São Francisco began around 1525, and the adjacent primitive church dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição dates to 1709, later expanded and renamed Igreja de São José in 1714.

To the north stands the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, completed around 1545—the first convent for nuns in Ponta Delgada—home to the statue of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres gifted by Pope Clement VII. This site now contains one of the richest jewellery collections in the Azores.

Bordering the square to the south is the military Fort of São Brás, built in the mid-1500s for defence, along with the maritime promenade—forming a striking urban ensemble that blends religious, military, and civic heritage .

For over three centuries, Campo de São Francisco has been the spiritual and cultural heart of Ponta Delgada, especially during the famed Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, when thousands of pilgrims and locals gather here amidst lights, music, and devotion. The square also hosts summer concerts around its elegant bandstand (coreto), originally inaugurated in 1871, replacing a former ornamental fountain from 1718. That original bandstand tragically burned in 1957 before the festival season but was rebuilt to continue the local traditions.

Today, the square is more than landmark stones—it’s a living, leafy public space. A majestic Metrosideros tree, planted circa 1870, towers over the plaza and has become a beloved fixture; its aging branches are now supported to preserve its legacy. You can also visit the statue of Mother Teresa da Anunciada, whose devotion helped establish the Santo Cristo festival in Ponta Delgada.

Constantly alive, the Campo offers ambient café kiosks, public benches, and hosts drinks or snacks as people enjoy shaded strolls. It’s especially popular in summer evenings when street life buzzes around open-air performances near the coreto.

🔄 Restoration & Public Value
Between 2013–14, the city undertook a major requalification project. Costing approximately €961,000 (most funded by EU contributions), the renovation sought to preserve the square’s historic identity while making it more accessible. This included installing a smooth basalt walkway for pilgrims’ processions and updating the bandstand with mechanized platforms for flexible use during events. Mayor José Manuel Bolieiro described the restoration as a “return” of the space to citizens, reinforcing the plaza’s place as a symbol of Azorean identity and public life.

"Most definitely one of the main attractions in Ponta Delgada. Very picturesque large leafy square richly soaked in hostorical past and surrounded by Ponta Delgada important landmarks.
There exists certain confusion in regard to the square's name. Originally the square was named Campo de São Francisco after the former convent of São Francisco (now Igreja de São José), at the western edge of the square. Later renamed Praça 5 de Outubro to commemorate the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy on the same day in 1910, the praça (square) has by now, when the revolutionary fervor has subsided, reverted to its original name.
Yet another church, certainly worth visiting, is Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, located at the northern edge of the square. Inside, to the left of the entrance there is Sanctuary of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, one of the most sacred relics for Azorean people. In front of the entrance, inside, there is a beautiful traditional Portuguese azulejos wall (blue ceramic tiles unique to Portugal and its various territories).
To the left of the main entrance there is a statue venerating Mother Teresa da Anunciada (1658 - 1738 ), a nun who became famous as the initiator of the devotion to Santo Cristo dos Milagres in the city of Ponta Delgada, today the biggest religious festival in the Azores.
Also, not to be missed is a giant tree planted in 1870, of the metosideros variety, also known as New Zealand Christmas Tree. Because of its respected age, the branches are under a constant danger of breaking/falling; they are now being supported by special beams but exercise caution."
