Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Castelo de São Jorge for its breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon and its rich historical significance. The presence of peacocks adds a unique charm, and many enjoy exploring the palace ruins and archaeological site. However, some find the uphill walk challenging and note that it can get crowded during peak hours.

"The Castelo de São Jorge is an absolute highlight of Lisbon and a place I would recommend to anyone visiting the city. Perched high above the city, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon, the Tagus River, and the iconic red rooftops – truly picture-perfect, especially at sunset. The castle itself is rich in history, with impressive ancient walls, towers, and walkways that take you back in time. Walking through the grounds feels peaceful and enchanting, with beautiful gardens, peacocks roaming freely, and plenty of spots to pause and soak in the atmosphere. It’s not just about the views – there’s also a small museum and archaeological site inside, which add depth to the visit and showcase Lisbon’s past. While it can get busy, the overall experience is magical. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, explore at your own pace, and really feel the history and charm of the city. A must-see when in Lisbon!"

Patrick J

"Wonderful castle, very well preserved. It's quite big, so there is a lot to explore and the best, the view over the city of Lisbon is just magnificent. Especially the old town, where you can see the architecture.
There is a community of peacocks living in the castle, they are very adorable and not afraid of the tourist.
It's really worth the visit, to get a panoramic view of the city.
Highly recommended."

Sónia Martins

"A beautiful place to while away some time whilst taking in stunning views over Lisbon. Guided tours are available but you can just wander at your leisure. €15 entry. The battlements won't be suitable for those with mobility issues but there are beautiful gardens to walk around or just sit and enjoy the shade.
The surrounding streets have some nice bistros and cafés where you can relax and chat."

A Glimpse into History

The Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle) has a history stretching back to Roman times, but its most significant period began with the Moorish conquest in the 10th century. It served as a royal residence for Portuguese kings after the Reconquista in 1147, playing a crucial role in the defense and administration of Lisbon. The castle's strategic hilltop location offered unparalleled views and a commanding presence over the city and the Tagus River. Instagram

Within its walls, you can explore the remnants of the royal palace, which was largely destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The archaeological site within the castle grounds reveals layers of history, from Roman settlements to Moorish fortifications and medieval structures. The Torre do Tombo, a former tower within the castle, was once the repository for the kingdom's most important documents, underscoring its historical administrative importance. Instagram

Today, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to walk through history, enjoy stunning vistas, and appreciate the enduring legacy of Lisbon's past. The blend of historical ruins, defensive structures, and natural beauty makes it a captivating destination for history buffs and casual visitors alike.

Navigating the Castle Grounds

Exploring Castelo de São Jorge involves navigating its historic ramparts, courtyards, and ruins. The castle is situated on a steep hill, so comfortable footwear is essential for tackling the cobblestone paths and numerous staircases. Many visitors recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds. TikTokReddit
