What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Horta Coastal Trail for its beautiful forest scenery and the rewarding caldeira at the end. However, many caution that the trail's condition can be significantly impacted by rain, leading to muddy and obstructed paths. Proper footwear and checking weather conditions are frequently highlighted as essential for a positive experience.
"We love the levada trails on the Madeira island and hiked back and forth many of them, so we decided to try the Faial levada as well. However, visiting this trail after a heavy overnight storm was a cause of great disappointment. When we visited (16 March 2025), the trail already at the very start of the levada past the reservoir was overflooded, muddy and obstructed by fallen trees. Hence, we are unable to provide detailed review of the trail itself, but if you decide to do this trail make sure it didn't rain heavily in the recent days."

"Only recommended when it has been dry for consecutive days. It's just mud and mud and mud otherwise. Turned back after 1.6k no fun."

Understanding Levada Trails
Hiking along a levada means you'll often be walking alongside flowing water, with the path sometimes narrow and bordered by vegetation. The terrain can vary from well-maintained paths to more rugged, unmaintained sections, as noted by some hikers. It's important to be aware of your surroundings, as some levada paths can be steep or have sheer drops.
When planning a levada hike, always check the trail's condition. Heavy rainfall can cause flooding and make paths impassable or dangerous. Local advice and recent trail reports are invaluable. Despite potential challenges, the beauty of the Azorean landscape, with its vibrant flora and dramatic water features, makes levada hiking a truly memorable experience.
Navigating Trail Conditions and Safety
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it is crucial to check the weather forecast and recent trail reports before setting out. If there has been heavy rain in the preceding days, it might be advisable to postpone your hike or choose an alternative trail. Wearing appropriate footwear, such as sturdy hiking boots with good grip, is non-negotiable. This will provide stability on slippery surfaces and protect your feet.
Beyond the mud, be mindful of the natural environment. While the trail is generally considered moderate, the presence of water channels and potentially uneven terrain requires attention. Staying on marked paths and being aware of your footing will help you avoid accidents. For longer hikes, carrying water, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit is always a good practice.
