What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Mosteiro de Flor da Rosa for its well-maintained historical architecture and the unexpected bonus of staff sharing its history. The free entry and available parking are significant advantages. Some find the attached hotel's exterior slightly jarring, but the overall experience is highly recommended for its historical significance and serene atmosphere.
"This is really pretty and well maintained convent, they've done a good job of renovating it. The hotel/hostel attached to the convent looks a bit out of place on the outside, which is a shame. Inside the convent one of the staff gave us a short introduction to the history of the place, which was a nice unexpected touch.
Definitely worth a look if your in the area and worth the entry fee of 2 euros. Good parking and toilets are both available."

Constructed by the Knights Hospitaller, it is considered both one of the most important Gothic monuments in Portugal and the best Portuguese example of a fortress church.
In 1232 King Sancho II donated the town of Crato to the Hospitallers Order. The building of the monastery began around 1340. The monastery comprised three different buildings, a Gothic-style fortress church, a Gothic castle-like palace, and accommodation for the monks. At the entrance to the church is the tomb of the founder, D. Frei Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira.
The complex acquired its present form in the 1990s when parts were transformed into a hotel of the Pousadas de Portugal chain."

"There is not a lot to see in Flor da Rosa but for the ancient monastery...but thanks to that, it has a rare sense of being exactly the same village as 500 years ago. All houses are authentic, with yellow and with as their uniformity. If you are in the neighbourhoud, it is certainly worth a stop."
