What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ponte Edgar Cardoso is recognized as a significant engineering feat and a vital link for Figueira da Foz. Visitors appreciate its scenic views and the city's welcoming atmosphere. However, ongoing construction and past issues with cycling access have been noted as drawbacks, sometimes leading to traffic disruptions and challenging experiences for cyclists.
"My partner and I are cycling to Lisbon and weren’t sure how to cross the river here because the bridge is massive and not safe for bikes. Just wanted to leave this review to let other cyclists know you can cross by ferry for €1 from Figueira da Foz harbour. We didn’t find this info on the EuroVelo website, so hopefully this helps someone else looking for the same thing!"

"November 2025: We were told that the bridge now has a limited bike lane, and while it does exist, there were railings at both ends blocking the way. We climbed around them, but it was a terrible experience overall! In the end, you have to ride on the road anyway.
Unfortunately, the ferry no longer takes bikes, so there's no other option but to take a very long detour."

Engineering Marvel and Rehabilitation
However, like many large infrastructure projects, the bridge has undergone extensive rehabilitation and reinforcement works. These efforts are essential for ensuring its long-term safety and functionality. Travelers should be aware that these works can lead to temporary traffic disruptions, including full nighttime closures, as seen in recent reports.
Understanding the ongoing nature of these improvements is key to planning a smooth journey. While the bridge is a symbol of progress, its maintenance is an ongoing process that impacts daily travel.
Cycling and Pedestrian Experience
Travelers seeking a safer cycling route have historically relied on a ferry service for crossing. However, there are indications that this ferry may no longer accommodate bicycles, necessitating a potentially significant detour to the next available bridge, which is about 15km east.
For those walking, the bridge offers a substantial crossing. It's advisable to stick to designated paths and remain aware of vehicular traffic. The experience can be rewarding for the views, but preparedness for the scale of the crossing is recommended.
