What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary

"Closed to visit. After and long walk, couldn't even find a shade near the Farol"
Uriel Queiroz
"Located in the Parque Florestal da Serra da Boa Viagem, the original tower dates back to the 19th century (1835), which served as a lighthouse until the beginning of the 20th century and whose work was entrusted to the engineer Gaudêncio Fontana, who until 1847 directed the service of the Lighthouses. The work would only be concluded in 1858, when Ipácio Vielle was already director of Faros. The work was directed by the captain of the frigate Francisco Maria Pereira da Silva, who would later become inspector of the Lighthouses of the Kingdom.
In 1916, a formal proposal was made to change the location of the lighthouse, which would be built further north.
The current lighthouse began to be built in 1917, and the work was completed in 1922.
The building is formed by a central tower and two longitudinal bodies and the initial project had a second-order fresnel lenticular optic fed by oil. The new project features technical innovations, namely: general electrification and sound signals (installed in 1941, consisting of a compressed air horn that would be replaced in 1953 by a Barbier diaphone). from Penedo da Saudade.
This Property has been classified as being of municipal interest since 2004."

"In Portugal all lighthouses offer free public entry on Wednesdays. We took advantage of this and visited the Farol do Cabo Mondego. The guide/Maritime Police officer was very informative and was open to all questions. The sights were beautiful. Thank you for offering this to us. We look forward to visiting more lighthouses."

A Glimpse into History
The need for modernization and a better location led to a formal proposal in 1916 to relocate the lighthouse further north. The current lighthouse construction began in 1917 and was completed in 1922. This new structure featured a central tower and two longitudinal bodies, incorporating technical innovations such as general electrification and sound signals, including a compressed air horn and later a diaphone.
Recognizing its historical and architectural significance, the property was classified as being of municipal interest in 2004. This designation underscores its value as a cultural heritage site, preserving its legacy for future generations.

Beyond sunsets, the panoramic coastal views are a major draw. The lighthouse provides a vantage point to capture the sweeping lines of the Figueira da Foz coastline, from the sandy beaches to the rugged cliffs. Drone photography enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to capture unique aerial perspectives of the lighthouse and its dramatic seaside setting.
When planning your photography session, consider bringing a wide-angle lens for expansive landscapes and a telephoto lens to zoom in on the lighthouse details or distant coastal features. A tripod is highly recommended for low-light conditions during sunset and for sharper images. Remember to check local regulations regarding drone usage if you plan to fly one.

The park's elevated position provides excellent viewpoints, complementing the vistas from the lighthouse itself. While the primary attraction is the lighthouse, the surrounding park adds significant value to the visit. It's a place to enjoy the fresh air, listen to the sound of the sea, and appreciate the natural beauty of the Portuguese coast.
