A Glimpse into History

The Fort of Nossa Senhora da Natividade, also known by several other names including Forte de Milreu and Forte da Ericeira, was constructed in 1706. Its primary purpose was to defend the fisherman's beach and control maritime access to Ericeira from the north. It was part of a small group of forts built during the Portuguese Restoration War to protect the coastline. The fort's design is in the Mannerist style, featuring a rectangular plan with a terraced roof, a main gate with a full arch, and defensive gunnery positions. It also includes two cylindrical turrets with conical roofs. Reddit

Despite its historical significance, the fort is noted to be in a state of disrepair. One visitor mentioned feeling that neglect had overshadowed its undeniable historical interest, even with a plaque indicating its reopening in 1976. However, the fort's strategic location and its remnants still offer a tangible connection to Portugal's past defensive strategies. Reddit

Visiting the fort provides an opportunity to reflect on its historical role and imagine the past. The surrounding area also offers a pleasant environment for a walk, with the chance to observe local marine life on the rocks. Reddit
