Cacela Velha is widely praised as a beautiful and historic gem in the Algarve, offering stunning panoramic views of the Ria Formosa and a peaceful atmosphere. "Beautiful gem of history. Over a thousand years and 3 completely different cultures.

Amazing."

Eric Wilson

"Com uma vista soberba sobre o oceano atlântico, a fortaleza de Cacela Velha encanta pelo seu respeito pela história, pela natureza e pelo legado daqueles que por ali passaram.
Ainda s pode denotar a influência árabe nesta região.
Aconselho a visita, pois é uma localidade única e com uma vista paradisíaca."

Álvaro Seixas

"Fortification built in the 16th century on the remains of a fortress of Islamic origin. A fortress of Phoenician or Carthaginian origin possibly existed on this site, which was later reused after the Roman occupation of the territory. In the 10th century, following the Islamic occupation of the area, a citadel or castle was built to control the maritime routes near Tavira. In the 13th century, the fortress was abandoned and remodeled by the Order of Santiago after the Christian conquest of the area. In the 16th century, the medieval castle was converted into a fort by order of King John III of Avis, and was in use until the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. In the 18th century, it underwent significant modifications to adapt it to new military tactics and artillery. At the end of the 19th century, the Fiscal Guard was installed inside, and it currently houses barracks for the Republican National Guard. The current structure has a star-shaped polygonal floor plan, with two bastions facing the sea. It preserves remains of canvases of the Arab wall of the medieval fortress in the lower part of the castle, as well as remains belonging to the Christian fortification, currently submerged under water."
