"One of the must see places, when visiting Portugal. Unique atmosphere"

Lenka K

"Only opens at specific time, so we got there at 1pm and it was closed, however the climb up was not bad at all."

Meliza Hardeman

"I do hesitate with the rating as it was like 2 euro for 2 minutes so doesn't sound like a good value for money. But it is indeed quite unique in terms of antique mechanism and looks cute:) Also helpful for people who'd struggle to climb 550 steps, although for reasonably fit person it's around 15 minutes and it's nice to walk! The park, gardens and views are beautiful. Unfortunately the information was scarce and the operator didn't speak English. I'm not entitled but it would help if some more info was available."

The Engineering Marvel: Bom Jesus Funicular

The Bom Jesus do Monte Funicular is not just a mode of transport; it's a piece of living history. Inaugurated in 1882, it holds the distinction of being the oldest water-powered funicular in the world that is still operational. Instagram+2 Its ingenious system utilizes the weight of water to move the carriages. The upper carriage fills a large tank with water, making it heavier. As this heavier carriage descends, its weight pulls the lighter, empty carriage up the opposing track. Once at the bottom, the water is emptied, and the process is reversed, often with water being pumped back to the top. This sustainable and elegant solution was a marvel of 19th-century engineering and remains a fascinating attraction. Instagram+1

While the ride itself is short, typically lasting around three minutes, it offers a unique glimpse into historical transportation methods. Visitors often remark on the antique mechanism and its cute appearance. Reddit It's particularly helpful for those who might find the strenuous climb up the 573 steps of the Baroque stairway challenging. Reddit The funicular connects the lower part of the sanctuary grounds to the upper level, providing convenient access to the main church and viewpoints. Instagram

Despite its historical significance, some visitors note that the cost for the short ride might not feel like the best value for money. Reddit However, for many, the experience of riding such a unique and historic piece of machinery is well worth the small fee. It's a testament to the ingenuity of its creators and a memorable part of any visit to Braga. Instagram

Known as the 'Stairway of the Five Senses,' each level is designed to represent a different sense, guiding pilgrims and visitors through a symbolic path of purification and devotion. Instagram+1 The lower sections often feature fountains and motifs related to sight and smell, while higher levels might incorporate elements representing hearing, touch, and taste, culminating in a spiritual ascent. Reddit

This grand staircase, with its 573 steps, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prime example of Baroque art and architecture in Portugal. Instagram+1 The intricate details, sculptures, and water features create a visually stunning and contemplative experience. Visitors often find the passages and fountains along the way to be thought-provoking, even if they are not religious. Reddit The climb itself, while requiring some effort, is considered a rewarding part of the visit, offering beautiful perspectives of the surrounding landscape as you ascend. Reddit

For those who prefer not to undertake the full climb, the funicular provides an alternative route to the top. Reddit However, many recommend walking at least part of the way, or even the entire ascent, to fully appreciate the symbolism and artistry embedded within the stairway. Instagram The combination of the historical funicular and the symbolic stairway makes Bom Jesus do Monte a truly unique destination. Instagram
