What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the atmospheric castle ruins and the rewarding panoramic views from the hilltop. The historical significance and the challenging, adventurous hike are frequently praised. However, the steep and unsecured nature of the ruins makes it less suitable for families with young children or those seeking easy accessibility.
"Nowy Dwór Castle is the ruins of a rather large castle – I love that kind of atmosphere :) Unfortunately, the ascent and descent are difficult and steep. However, the views make up for the effort."

"Nowy Dwór Castle in Wałbrzych. Finding it and then climbing Castle Hill is already quite a feat. The castle ruins in the form of an irregular, elongated complex occupy practically the entire top of the mountain. The stronghold consisted of two courtyards. In the western part of the complex, the Gothic entrance gate of the former gate tower has been preserved. Part of the perimeter walls, fragments of Renaissance bastions, remains of residential buildings and the former cistern have survived to this day."

"There are three paths leading to the castle. A very steep, steep and old road to the castle which is now a path.
In the summer the forest is full of ticks, there are also deer shearers known as flying ticks, so I advise you to smear yourself with something that scares this shit away. On the way you can meet roe deer and sometimes wild boars, a lot of wild birds including predatory ones. It is better not to take children, not only uphill but also in the castle itself there are many dangerous, unsecured places.
In the castle you can pitch a tent, there is room for a few, a dozen of them, there are three places for bonfires. Views on one side of Wałbrzych and on the other of the mountains. A yellow tourist trail runs through the castle.
Situated on a high, steep hill, the stronghold - Nowy Dwór - Rittergut Neuhaus (Ogorzelec) had a spindle-shaped, subordinated to the terrain conditions layout of external walls, about 140 meters long and 25 meters wide. The upper castle, built of broken stone, had the form of an elongated, slightly bent rectangle, separated from the west by a moat carved into the rock. The complex consisted of peripheral walls, a rectangular house in the north-west corner, another elongated house at the eastern wall and a slightly protruding tower in the south-east corner, the purpose of which is difficult to clearly determine. The entrance to the castle probably led from the west through a pointed Gothic gate and then through the outer bailey, formed in the 16th century. Longer sections of the outer bailey walls, separated from the high castle by a moat with a water cistern, were reinforced in the central sections from the north with a semi-cylindrical bastion, and from the south with a pointed argule. During the Thirty Years' War, when the castle was already abandoned, it received additional fortifications in the form of two small bastions: the southern one below the stronghold walls and the northern one at the Gothic gate. The ruins are located on the top of Castle Hill (618 m). The castle was built by Bolko II the Small, Duke of Świdnica-Jawor, in the mid-14th century. The first mention of the building comes from 1364. After the death of Bolko II, the castle passed into Czech hands. In the years 1402-1417 it was expanded. From 1434 it was owned by the Czettritz family. At the beginning of the 16th century it was rebuilt again in the Renaissance style. After 1581, when it burned down after being struck by lightning, the Czettritz family built a new residence for themselves in today's center of Wałbrzych. The castle had a spindle-shaped shape. It consisted of an upper castle and a bailey separated by a dry moat carved in the rock. The bailey began from the north with a Gothic entrance gate. The Gothic gate portal, the bailey walls and fragments of the walls and buildings of the upper castle have survived to this day."

History and Architecture
Over centuries, the castle underwent several transformations. It was expanded between 1402-1417 and rebuilt in the Renaissance style at the beginning of the 16th century. Despite a fire in 1581, parts of its Gothic entrance gate, perimeter walls, and fragments of Renaissance bastions have survived. The ruins offer a glimpse into medieval and Renaissance defensive architecture, including remnants of residential buildings and a former cistern.
Unlike some of its neighboring fortresses, Nowy Dwór Castle managed to survive periods of conflict, including the Hussite wars. Today, its ruins stand as a testament to its historical significance, offering a tangible connection to the past for visitors who make the challenging ascent.
The Challenging Ascent and Rewards
However, the effort is widely considered to be worth it. The primary reward is the absolutely stunning panoramic views from the castle's hilltop location. You'll be treated to sweeping vistas of Wałbrzych on one side and the picturesque surrounding mountains on the other. This breathtaking scenery is a major draw for visitors and a significant part of the castle ruins experience.
Beyond the views, the journey through the forest can also be an experience. While it's important to be aware of potential wildlife like deer and wild boars, and to take precautions against ticks in warmer months, the natural surroundings add to the adventurous feel of reaching these remote ruins.
