Reviews Summary

Visitors find Walim Drifts Riese to be an interesting historical site, particularly for WWII enthusiasts, with its unique tunnel system and poignant prisoner art exhibition. While the immersive elements are appreciated, some feel the tours could be more concise and the audio guides lack depth, especially for non-Polish speakers. The constant cold and extra cost for audio guides are noted drawbacks.

"An interesting site of World War II fortifications. Very friendly service. A place worth exploring."

"Not really worth it if you don't know Polish. The tunnels are definitely not worth 40 zl. There's not much to see. Its a few meters of tunnel with concrete reinforcement in some places. There are a few props explaining how it may have been during construction. The audio guide is an extra 14 zl which I didn't think was fair. There's hardly any info in the audio guide.
The saving grace is the exhibition of the sketches done by one of the prisoner in tunnel no. 2."

"Sztolnie Walimskie is only one of six underground systems of the Riese complex (Riese meaning giant). I highly recommend taking a guided trip through the mines and if you want to explore the area above then follow the paved road from the parking lot further up. If you want to get the most then schedule a whole day to explore, bring hiking shoes and comfortable warm clothing and get a map of the Riese area from web or Sztolnie Walimskie store and get lost in WW2 history! The other places to see are: Wlodarz Complex - guided trip of the mines and hiking trails above ground, Castle Ksiaz where you can stay overnight and get a guided trip of the underground and the castle and Osowka and Sobon mines plus lots of hiking trails all over the complex.
All the pictures are from Sztolnie Walimskie and they only show small portion of the guided trip. I didn’t post the biggest rooms because you have to see it in person and experience audio-visual sequences and get the firsthand feeling how tough the life of the forced labour was back then. The guide was very informative, knowledgeable and professional and will answer any questions you may have about Riese and you can also find many documentaries actually filmed in Sztolnie Walimskie on YT and I highly recommend ‘Podroznik w czasie’ channel!!
English and German audio guides are available at the ticket counter as well as great selection of Riese related books but mostly in Polish language."

Spanning a vast area in the Owl Mountains, the complex was intended for various purposes, including secret military facilities, research centers, and possibly even Hitler's headquarters. The sheer scale of excavation and construction, often carried out by forced laborers under brutal conditions, remains a testament to the era's engineering capabilities and human cost. Reddit
